Description

aitet fates getest @Hita CLARK ROOT AND BISHOP BENNETT, OF DE RUYTER, NEW YORK.
Letters Paten-t No. 74,432, dated February 11, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAWING-.MAGHINES.
@la -rlgemle referat tt im time trtter @anni mit mating mrt titte samt;
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that we, CLARK ROOT and BISHOP BENNETT, of De Ruyter, in the county of Madison, and State of New York, have invented a 'new and useful Improvement iu Drag-SawingMachne; and we do herebyr declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable -those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, formingpart of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of our invention, and
Figure 2 is a detail view of the same.
Similar ietters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hand-power dragsawng machines, of that class which are geared and'drivenby hand-levers, whereby they are operated with greater facility than heretofore, as hereinafter explained. v
In the nccompanyingdrawings, A is the platform, on which the driving-gear and lever are mounted. B is the hand-lever, and O the saw. The hand-lever has three arms, B B b, and is suspended at itsv centre by a swinging fulcrum,f. The saw is attached to the balance-wheel K in the ordinary manner, by a pitman, l, and the gear-connections between the working-shaft J and driving-crank shaft H consist in the spur-wheel and pinion I z', as usual. The swinging fulcrumjconsists in a crank-shaft, which'rests in the standards g, while the wrist f of this crank-shaft acts as a fulcrum for` the handvlcver. The arm b ofithe lever projects downward, and takes hold of the driving-crank shaft H.A
By this construction the annoyance of dead-centres, in starting the machine, is avoided. As one end of the lever is off of a. half centre when the other is on it, and the machine being operated hytwo men, and one end of the lever being always o of the centres, the machine is always ready to start without sticking on a. centre. When either end, B or B, of the lever, is at`thelowest point of its stroke, then that end is on a centre, but the opposite end of the lever being at the same time elevated to its highest point of stroke, it is off of the centre. Either end of the lever is clear of a centre when elevated to its highest point, or is on a centre when depressed to its lowest point, and by these means the opposite ends of the lever relieve each other in passing the dead-centres, and the annoyance arising from this source heretofore is obviated.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The three-armed lever B, swinging fulcrumf, and driving-devices K ZI z' H, all constructed and arranged as herein described and for the purpose sot forth. i
lThe above specification of our invention signed by us, this 11th day of October,1867.
CLARK ROOT, BISHOP BENNETT.
