EXERCISING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 743,204, dated November 3, 1903.

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED ERNEST TERRY, of the firm of Herbert Terry & Sons,of Novelty Works, Redditch, in the county of Worcester, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Exercising Apparatus; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention has for its object improve ments in chest-expanders, exercisers, and the like by which I increase the life of such articles and at the same time considerably improve their appearance with a reduction in the cost of manufacture. Hitherto the elastic portion of this class of expander or exerciser has been formed of india-rubber, which in the course of time loses its nature and elasticity and becomes hard and brittle, especially if subjected to extreme changes of temperature, to obviate which I form the extensible portion of such exercisers of metallic spring-coils, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a single chest-expander. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through same.
In carrying this invention into effect the metallic spring-coils A are formed by coiling steel or other suitable wire of various gages and section into springs, which may be varied in section as desired, but which I prefer to form of circular section, as shown. The ends of these metallic spring-coils are bent round to form rings B, to which the handles 0 are linked in such a manner as to allow of the most perfect lateral flexibility between the handles 0 and metallic spring-coils A. In cases where it is desired to restrict the extensibility of the metallic spring-coils within certain limits the spring-tape, cord, or metallic connection D of limited extensibility is provided to connect the two ends B of the metalliccoils A together, such connection passing through the-interior of the said metallic coil, which thus forms a covering to the connecting medium D. In case of using a thinwire connection D the wire is crimped or coiled to easy curves over its whole length for the better assembling of the wire when the metallic coil returns to its normal-state dis tention.
The strength of the metallic expanders and exercisers can be varied by the use of difierthe metallic coils both interchangeably and otherwise may be varied so long as flexibility is maintained in the joint or connection between the two and further that in the case of the interchangeable expanders and exercisers such connections shall be so securely fastened that there is no possibility of their becoming accidentally disconnected.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that'what I claim is- 1. In an exercising apparatus, the combination of an exterior spring-coil, a metallic spring-coil of limited extensibility surrounded by said exterior coil, and means for operating the coils connected with the ends of the exterior coil.
2. In an exercising apparatus, the combination of an outer spring-coil, a metallic spring-coil of limited extensibility surrounded by the outer coil, and means formed upon the extremities of the outer coil for connecting.

3. In an exercising apparatus, the combination of an outer metallic spring-coil, a handle flexibly connected to each end thereof, and a metallic spring-coil surrounded by said .coil and having its ends connected to the ends of the outer coil.
4:. In an exercising apparatus, the combination of an outer metallic spring-coil, a handle flexibly connected to each end thereof, and a metallic spring-coil of limited extensibility surrounded by the outer coil and connected to said coils ends for restricting the undue extension of the outer coil.
