PATENT OFFICE.
MACHI NE FOR LABELING ROUND PASTEBOARD 0R PAPER BOXES 0R CASINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 743,083, dated. November 3, 1903.
Application filed December 30, 1902- Serial No. 137,118. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND EMIL J A- GENBERG, a citizen of Germany, and a resident of Dusseldorf, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Attaching Labels to Boxes, of-
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a machine by which a label or filament is so secured to the body of a round box that its overlapping edge will be securely glued to the underlying edge.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front View of my improved machine, showing the magazine raised; Fig. 2, asimilar View with the magazine lowered, and Fig. 3 a bottom view of the glue-box.
The numeral 1 represents a glue-box or a similar device, such as a gluing roller or strip, for providing the rear end of a label with glue or paste. The drawing Fig. 3 shows the gluebox provided with a perforated bottom, which discharges only the liquid glue in limited quantities at the places desired. A sliding.
gate 10 may be used to regulate the outflow of the glue. vertically-movable magazine 11, containing the labels, filaments,or paper coverings A,that are to be secured to the surface of a cylindrical box 12. The magazine 11 projects with its rear end beneath the box 1 and with its front end beneath a rotatable cylindrical mandrel 2, upon which the box 12 is slipped. The mandrel 2 may be rotated by means of a pulley 17 and belt 18. A cam 4 imparts vertical reciprocating movement to magazine 11 by forked lever 13 and pin 14.
A pressure-roller 3 is hung in one end of a lever 7, pivoted at 15 to an elbow-lever 6,
which is oscillated by cam 4. through camroller 5. The lever 7 is influenced by a spring 16 and is provided with a shoulder 8, adapted to be engaged by a fixed arm 9. p
The operation is as follows: As the magazine 11 is raised the rear end of the uppermost label A is coated with glue from box 1,
while its front end will be pressed against the box 12 on mandrel 2, such box being previously coated with glue. The magazine descends, and the label A will, by the rotation of the mandrel, be laid around the box and glued thereto. As the magazine descends the roller 3 is advanced by elbow-lever 6 toward the mandrel and is pressed against the label by the spring 16 and the engagement of arm Beneath the glue-box is arranged a 9 with the right end of shoulder 8, Fig. 2. After the label has been properly pasted to the box and before the next ascent of the to be embraced by the box, and with a reciprocating label-magazine beneath the glue-sup plier and mandrel, substantially as specified.
2. In a machine for attaching labels to boxes, the combination of a glue-supplier, with a rotatable cylindrical mandrel adapted to be embraced by the box, a reciprocating label-magazine beneath the glue-supplier and mandrel, and a pressure-roller adapted to be advanced against the mandrel, substantially as specified.
3. In a machine for attaching labels to boxes, the combination of a glue-supplier, with a rotatable cylindrical mandrel adapted to be embraced by the box, a reciprocating label-magazine beneath the glue-supplier and mandrehaspring infiuenced lever, apressureroller pivoted thereto, a shoulder on the lever, and an arm adapted to engage the-shoulder, substantially as specified.
4. In a machine for attaching labels to boxes, the combination of a glue-supplier, with a rotatable cylindrical mandrel adapted to be embraced by the box, a reciprocating label-magazine beneath the glue-supplier and mandrel, a cam, an elbow lever actuated thereby, a spring-influenced lever pivoted to "the elbow-lever, apressure-roller carried by the lover, a shoulder on the lever, and an arm adapted to engage the shoulder, substantially as specified.
Signed by me at the United States consulate, Dusseldorf, this l2th day of December, 1902.
FERDINAND EMIL JAGENBERG.
