EDWARD J. COOK, OF STERLING, ILLINOIS.
CURTAIN-DRAPING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 742,008, dated October 20, 1903.
Application filed December 18, 1902. Serial No. 135,825. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern-.-
Beit known that I, EDWARD J. COOK, acitizen of the United States, residing at Sterling, in the county of Whiteside and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Draping Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has reference to curtain-draping devices, and is especially designed to assist in holding back the lower end of a window-curtain in different positions and at varying heights above the Window-sill, as may be desired.
A common method of securing the free end of the curtain is by means of a loop or other fixture fastened to the casing at the side of the window. By the use of my invention the height of the curtain-holder above the sill is capable of adjustment and a greater amount of freedom permitted in the draping of the curtain.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of my device. Fig. 2 is a view exhibiting one side of a window with my invention in use therein.
1 is a clamp in ordinary form adapted to be attached to the ledge or sill of a window by means of the thumb-screw 2. On the upper edge of the clamp 1 and integral therewith is a socket 3, in which is seated in any suitable manner a tubular support 4, open at the upper end and furnishing a support for the tubular standard 5. The standard 5 is adapted to telescope within the support 4 and can.
be securedat any point therein by means of a thumb-screw 6 extending through the support 4 and impinging the outer face of such standard.
At the upper end of the standard 5 is pivotally seated a short stem 7, to which is rigidly secured between ears 11 by pin 12 a spring-clip 8, by means of which a fold of the curtain is held.
In Fig. 2 my device is shown in position on the sill 9 of a window with a fold of the curtain 10 in the grasp of the clip 8. It is apparent that by raising or lowering the standard 5 the draping of the curtain may be varied to suit the taste, and,if desired, the clamp 1 may be secured to the front edge of the sill instead of at the end. The latter method is preferred, however, on account of the device being more out of the way and out of sight.
The fact of the clip 8 being pivotally secured in thestandard enables it to be turned at any angle, and thus more easily secured to the curtain.
My invention is simple in construction, convenient to use, and the attachment thereof to the window-sill by means of the clamp avoids the necessity of marring or defacing the woodwork of the window, as is done by some fixtures used for a like purpose. The device being between the curtain and window-frame, it is practically out of sight.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In a curtain-draping device, a clamp, a standard secured in said clamp, a tubular standard vertically adjustable in said firstnamed standard, a stem pivotally seated in said second-named tubular standard, a rightangular extension on said stem, ears provided on said extension, a spring-clip secured between said ears, and a pin passing through said ears and clip, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD COOK.
