Be it known that I, HENRY D. RUMSEY, of Homer, in the county of'` CortlundlSta-te of vNew York, have invented u new and improved Mode of Removing and Replacing the Heads of Barrels, Cesks, or ButterfFirkins', i

without the necessity of displacing the hoops, or 4otherwise injuring the cooperage .of `the same; :ind I do hereby.

The nature of myjinvention consists inproviding a. cask'or rkin with slots and shoulder, for the -reception of an adjustable head, constructed with flanges on theedge of sanne, in suche manner that when the head is let down into position, and turned to place by means of a, cleat or other convenient device, it 'is firmly ield to4 said shoulder, thus closing up the borrel or ,cask in a. perfectly air and water-tight condition.

v I construct my barrel, cask, or irkin, in any of the known forms, except that I leave the shoulder a and projection c, making the slot b'npon the inner side, 'as shown hy fig: 3. I also construct the head 4with wedgeshnped flange e, as sho-wn by iig. 4,*so that when it isilet down into position and turnedto place, the flange e will {it tightly into the slots b, which are made wider at one end than at the other for their reception, as shown by g. 3, thus forcing the cover down tightly to the shoulder a.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 'is- The application of the flange to adjustable covers, and the slot to the inside of barrels, casks, or firkins, `for the purpose of the more readily opening and closing the so'me e'ectually without starting or nnhoopng them,
