Description

PATENTED, OCT. 13, 19031.

TRAIN I APPLICATION FILED DBO. 8, 1902.

I m: Norms nuans co. Fwm'oLmm,v WASHINGTON, a. c.
No. M1330.
UNITED STATES Patented October 13, 1903.
PATENT FFICE.
TRAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 741,330, dated October 13, 1903.
Application filed December 8,1902.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATHIAS Hnnrnnnm. architect, a subject of the King of Bavaria, and a resident at Nos. 38 and 39 Friedrichsfelderstrasse, Mannheim, in the Grand Duchy of Baden, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Traps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to traps applicable to sewers, kitchen-sinks, drains, and similar purposes. By means of this device in the case of sewers becoming suddenly overfilled in consequence of heavy rains or floods the water in the conduits is prevented from mounting and gettingback into the street. The escape of ofiensive smells or gases from foul deposits in the same is also made impossible.
The accompanying drawings, wherein similar letters refer to similar parts throughout both views, show in Figure 1 a longitudinal section, and in Fig. 2 a cross-section through y y, of my device.
The device consists of a funnel-shaped gully 0, having at its upper end the usual grate b, and the pipe or socket at the lower end of the gully widens into a cap (1, the lower brim of which is nearly on a level with the upper brim of the mud-pail e, which stands at the bottom of the cylindrical body a. In this pail is arranged a floating ball f, the diameter of which is less than that of the cap (I, but greater than that of the socket of the gully. The weight of this ball is such that it keeps the lower or inner orifice of the gully closed when the siphon is normally filled and also when the sewage-water from below attempts to rise above the level of this ball, while, on the other hand, it yields to the pressure of the inflowing water from above.
When the mud-pail is completely filled with semi liquid and solid deposits, it will not be possible to drive the ball away from the orifice, and the water in the street then collecting will give a warning that the pail requires to be emptied and cleaned.
Beside its application for sewers this closing device may be used for urinals, waterclosets, and in all cases where a prevention of the escape of offensive smells or gases from water-conduits is desired.
The gully c is held in position in the trap a by a tube or collar '5, which is kept in place Serial No. 134,392. (No model.)
in the kitchen-sink, &c., by its upper flange, which holds the sieve b, or by means of a flange 1c, fixed at its lower end. This collar 2' is slidable upon a cylinder Z,"which is closed at the bottom and serves as the siphon-body and can be fixed upon the same in different positions by means of clamping-screws m or by other methods. Also longitudinally slidable and horizontally turnable upon its support Z is the outlet-tube n, which has an arrangement by means of which it can be held in any required position. By means of this telescopic joint between the cylinder land the collar 2' the distance between the position of the closing-ball and the lower edge of the opening in the cylinder Z, leading to the outlet-tube 'n, can be modified, and thereby the pressure of the water column which keeps the ball in its place, while the adjustable connection 0 between the outlet-tube n .and the cylinderZ allows of thedevice beingfixed to any existing water-conduits and also the insertion of the cylinder Z into its supportingcollar 2'.
In constructing the trap provision is made for a stuffingring p to prevent the escape of offensive gases through the upper supports of the funnel 0 between the bearing-flange of the funnel and the upper'flange of the body of the trap or or the collar t. This stuffingring is secured by screws (not shown in the drawings) between the two flanges, and the connection is thus made water-tight and airtight.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In a trap comprising a casing having a water-inlet in the top and an outlet in the side thereof, a removable sediment-receptacle located in said casing, a removable valve-seat located below the water-inlet and a valve adapted to be lifted by the accumulation of water from below to close said water-inlet, and means for adjusting said valve-seat in relation to the sediment-receptacle, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
MATHIAS HARTMANN.
