POST, of Castile, in the county of Wyoming, and State of New York,rh'ave molde a new and useful Improvement in Skates; ,and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full and correct: description of the same, suicient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understehd and use the same,rei`ercnce being had to the aecompenying drawings, melting part of this specifica non, and in which- Figure 1` is a bottom view of my iniproved skcte. Figure 2 is a sectional side elevation .of the same; and

Figures 3, 4, and 5, are-detached views of parts of the same.

A, in the drawings, represents the runner attached to the standards C and D of the foot-plate B, by rivets c and d, its front end passinginto the foot-plete, as shown at a. 0n the standard C is formed .the heel-ping b, which ts intoa hole made in the heel oi' the boot. e is a. This 'lever e is. secured to a bar, E, by means Oils. rivet,g, in such a, manner that the lever `e may move on the rivet, The rear ,Y end of the har EA is providednithe sharp point, and the under side of the front end is serrated, and provided i with a. hole in which is formed a female-screw thread, and rests Onthe serrated surface of the slotted rear Aend i of the har F, to which it is secured by means of a screw, h, passing upwards through the slot z' in the bar F, l and into the hole in the front end of the bar E. AThe bar E is made wider in that pnrt which passes over the l arms jj of thestandard D, so as to form e biete, k, which is. provided at its under side with two` ridges Z, thc l forward ends of which are inclined towards each other, and 'dt in' diagonal grooves inthe horizontal 'parts of l the clamps G. It will be easily understood that the clamps Gr are forced outward by the ridges l l working in the grooves m, when the har F is moved forward, and drawn toward eachother when the bar F is moved backward, which isdone by means of the-"lever liveted to the bar E, which is'afgain connected to the bar F, as already described, and asthe bar F is provided with n slot, z', `which allows the liars 'E and F to overlap each other more or less, the distance between the clamps G can'becasly'regulnted to suit each particular foot, byA merely'loosening the .screw h, moving the bar F forward or backward, as thel case may be, 'and again securing a, 'rigid connection between the bars E and F by tightening the screw h; the serrated under side of the forward end of the har E, and serrated surface of the rear end of the bar F 'preventing any slipping.V The cross-piece H of the front pla-te I3 hes depression, o, into which thespringdcver e tits when theske'te is fastened to the Ij'oot, and prevents the lever from loosening'accidentally. The blacklinesing. 1 indicate the positionofthe bars E and F and level-"e, when the skate is loosened 'from the boot, the hars beingpushed forwardV by the pivoted spring-lever @,which withdraws the pointed end of the barE from the inner side of the heel, and frces the clamps G outwardly. In rod linestheir positionis shown when the skate is secured to the foot, .the levere `resting inthe depressione, the point of the bur E in the inner end of the boot-heel, and the clamps G drawn towards each other by means of'the moving back of the bars and E. n is n projection which prevents the lever e from being moved over on that side. This skate contains but three rivets, c, d, and g, and one screw, la, alllthc other parts beinglcast or cutout from' metal. Its'mode of adjustment to the bootis simple, a'nd theskate can be quickly 'and firmly secured to the same;

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, und desire to secure by Letters Patent, is. 1. Adjusting the clamps G by mea-ns of the serrated bar F, provided with 'a slot, z'fin combination with the serrated forward end of the vhar E, both held in position' by a. screw, L, substantially as descrihed.
