THOMAS H. SMITH, OF KENDALLVLLE, INDIANA.
ADJUSTABLE VEHICLE-SEAT.
SPEGFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 741,077, dated October 13, 1903.
Y Application led April ll. 1903. vSerial No. 152,189. (No model.)
Toy a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Beit known that LTnoMAs H. SMITH@ citizen of the United States, residing at Kendallville, in the county of Noble and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Adjnstable Vehicle-Seat, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to 'passenger-vehicles, and has forits object to provide an auxiliary seat adapted to be projected into suitable position relative to the vehicle-'seat to support an additional passenger without inconvenience to the occupants of the ordinary seat; and the invention consists in certain novel features of the construction whereby the desired results are attained,as hereinafter shown and described, and specified in the claims.
In the drawings illustrative of the invention,in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, Figure l is a longitudinal sectional'elevation with the anxiliary seat projected or in operative position. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the improved device, together with a portion of the vehicledoor, with the auxiliary seat Withdrawn.vr
This device may be attached to any of the.
ordinary makes of carriages and bnggies, but is more particularly applicable to bnggies or similar vehicles having level floors beneath the seat and in which it is often desired toV provide accommodations for a third person upon seats constructed only for two, and for the purpose of illustration the device is shown construction, With a seat 11 and its fall or valance-curtain 12 depending in front of the seat.
Disposed upon the floor of the vehicle, beneaththe seat, are spaced guide-tracks 13 14, in which a traveler 15 is movably mounted, the traveler having an upwardlyextending portion 16, as shown.
Pivotally connected to the portion 16 is a standard 17, having the auxiliary seat'18 upon its free end and adapted vwhen the'traveler is drawn orwardand the standard elevated, as in Fig. 1, to'proje'ct over the center of the seat 11 at a sufficient distance above the cushions thereon to provide a seat for a third person without inconvenience to the ordinary occupants of the vehicle-seat.
applied to a vehicle-body 10 of the ordinary Thestandard 17 is provided with an elongated aperture .19,throngh Which a button 20, mounted for rotation upon the traveler, is adapted to pass when the standard is elevated, and when this occurs and the button is rotated one-fourth a revolution the standard will be locked7 in its vertical position, as will be obvious.
`Vlhen in its elevated position, the standard and traveler will come in front of the fall or seat-valance 12, and when withdrawn beneath the seat 1l the auxiliary seat and other parts Will be entirely concealed by the valance, as Will be obvious. Thus the presence of the device will not detract from the appearance of the vehicle, as it will be entirely concealed when not in use. l
The rear portions of the guide-tracks 13 14 will preferably be provided with a housing or cover 2l to not only protect the traveler and its attachments when in their Withdrawn position, but also to protect the contents of the vehicle-box when the device is employed in vehicles having space for merchandise or other goods in the rear of the seat. The cover 'member will also be employed in vehicles having two permanent seats to prevent the feet of the occupants of the back seat from coming in contact with or being struck by the traveler when Withdrawn beneath the forward seat.
The auxiliary seat may be readily Withdrawn and set in operative position by one of the occupants of the seat 11 and without changing his position, and may likewise be released and returned to its position be- Death the seat in the same manner. Provi'- sion may thus be made for the extra passenger Without inconveuiencing or disturbing the other passengers, as will be obvious.
The whole structure is very simple, cheap, and easily applied, and may loev attached to the vehicle Without structural change of the vehicle. r
Changes in the minor portions of the structure may be made without departing from. the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages. Y A
Having thus described theinvention, what I claim is- 1. vThe combination with a vehicle-bodyand its seat, of a longitudinally-disposed guide- IOO way beneath the seat, al standard slidably mounted in said guidevvay, carrying a seat and adapted to slide forward in front of said permanent seat and to be elevated in front thereof, said standard being also adapted to be Withdrawn beneath said permanent seat.
2. The combination with a Vehicle-body and its seat of a guideway disposed upon the vehicle-floor beneath the seat, a traveler slidably engaging said guideway, a standard movably connected to said traveler and having a seat upon its free end and adapted to slide forward and be elevated in front of the seat and adapted to be 'withdrawn beneath said seat, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a vehicle-body and its seat of a guideway disposed upon the vehicle-floor beneath the seat, a traveler movably engaging said guideway, a standard movably connected to said traveler and having a seat upon its free end and adapted to slide for- Ward and be elevated in front of the seat and to be Withdrawn beneath the seat, and means carried by said traveler for locking said standard and its seat in their elevated position, substantially as described.
4. The combination Withavehicle-bodyand its seat of a guideway disposed upon the vehicle-floor beneath the seat, a traveler movably engaging said guideway, a standard movably connected to said traveler and having a seat upon its free end and adapted to be elevated in front of the seat and Withdrawn beneath the seat, said standard having an elongated aperture, and a catch rotatively mounted upon said traveler and adapted to engage said aperture and detachablylock said standard relative to said traveler, substantially as described.
5. The combination of a Vehicle-body and its seat of a iiexible curtain depending in front of said seat, a guideway upon the vehicle-oor in the rear of said curtain, a traveler mounted for movement upon said guideway, a standard movably connected to said traveler and carrying a seat upon its free end and adapted for elevation in front of said seat and its curtain or for Withdrawal beneath the seat and in the rear of said eurtain, substantially as described.
6. Thecombination Withavehicle-body and its seat, of a guidevvay disposed upon the vehicle-floor beneath the seat, a folding seat slidably mounted on said guideway, and a housing inclosing said 'guideway and forming a covering for said folding seat When in its Withdrawn position, substantially as described. Y
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
THOMAS II. SMITH.
