Description

- PATENTBD 0071'. s, 1903. J. GILLESPIE.
-1 APPLIQLTIOI FILM} IAB. 3, 1903. 10 MODEL.
JOHN GILLESPIE. v
UNITED STATES Patented October e, 1903.
PATENT OFFICE.
B-ED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent No. 740,550, dated October 6, 1903;
Application filed March s. 1903.
To 41% whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN GILLESPIE, a subject of the King of England, residing at the city of Winnipeg, in the Province of Mauitoba, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and-useful Improvements in Beds; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to bedsteads, and more particularly to the class of metallic bedsteeds; and it has for its object to provide a construction wherein the ordinary wooden frame for the spring may be dispensed with and wherein the spring may be readily removed and rolled up when the bed is taken down.
Other objects and advantages of the inven tion will be understood from the following desoription.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a top plan view showing a bed embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing one post and corner-block of the bedstead with an end rail engaged therewith and a side rail disengaged therefrom. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of a corner-block.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a bedstead comprising four cornerposts 5, upon each of which is disposed a corher-block 6, having a perforation 7 at one end, through which the post is engaged, and the opposite end of which block is reduced vertically to form a flange 8, through which is formed a vertical slot 9, having its inner end broadened. The end of the block or flange of the block is beveled, as illustrated. The side rails 10 of the bedstead have heads 11 at their ends, which engage in the enlarged portions of the slots of the blocks, and the ends of the rails adjacent to the heads are beveled oppositely to the flanges of the blocks to rest thereon and cause the heads to wedge Serial Nanette. on model.)
into the slots, so that they will be held securely and the bedstead will be firm. In the inner side faces of the block 6 are formed slots 12, in which are engaged the web portions 13 of end rails 14, the upper horizontal or body portions of the end rails projecting beyond these flanges, so that they rest upon the tops of the blocks. Upon the tops of the end rails are clamping-plates, between which and the rails are clamped the ends of the Wire mattress l5, and these clamping-plates are operated by clamping-screws 16, passed therethrough and engaged with the rails. One of these clamping-screws passes through that portion of each end of each rail that lies upon the corner-block and engages a socket 17 in the top of the block, so that the end rails are prevented from drawing away from the blocks, while by raising the end rails they may be readily disengaged from the blocks,
after which the wire mattress may be rolled up on either of the end rails or partly on each.
It will be seen that with the present construction the bedstead is held securely when it is set up and that when it is taken down it may be packed in a minimum space, it being understood that modifications of the specific construction shown may be made and that any suitable metal. and proportions may be used forthe various parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is- A bedstead comprising corn er-posts having blocks each provided with slots and a top socket, side rails eugagedwith certain of the slots in the blocks, end rails engaged with the remaining slots of the blocks and having portions lying upon the blocks and provided with pins removably engaged with the sockets, and a flexible mattress secured to the end rails and adapted to be wound thereon when the latter are disengaged from the blocks.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN GILLESPIE. Witnesses:
