Patented September 29, 1903 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BERT 'A. STOCKING, or AUDUBON, IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF 'r'o OF AUDUBON, IOWA.
FASTENER FOR STQVEPIPES AND COLLARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 740,376, dated. September 29, 1903.,
Application filed October 27, 1902. Serial No. 129,056. (No model.)
. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERT A. STOCKING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Audubon, in the county of Audubon and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Fastener for Stovepipes and Collars, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to provide a simple, strong, and durable device for jointly and detach- 1o ably fastening, a Stovepipe and Stovepipe-collar to a chimney'in such a manner that a Stovepipe connected with a stove and a collar on the pipe can be readily, detachably, and securely connected with a chimney to retain :5 a section of pipe-fixed in the chimney for combination, and arrangement of parts, as
hereinafter set forth, poin'ted outin my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of two metal plates connected by a rib and adapted to be fixed to a pipe-section in such a manner that the one plate will overlie the inside surface of the end of a Stovepipe-section and the other plate the outside surface at some distance Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View that shows the open space in the rib through which a rod is to be passed. Fig. 3 is a top View of a pipe-section to which the fastening device is fixed and 5 ready to be detachably connected with a chimney. Fig. 4 is a sectional View showing my invention applied as required for detachabl y fastening a Stovepipe to a chimney.
The numeral 10 designates a. metal plate 0 adapted to be fixed to the inside of the end of section of Stovepipe, and 12 is a corresponding plate adapted to be fixed on the outside of the same piece of pipe, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. A rib 13, formed integral 5 with the two plates at its large end, is hollow and arched, as shown in Fig. 2, and has a bore in the closed end, as shown in Fig. 1, adapted for extending a rod through the hollow rib from end to end, as shown in Fig. 3. The
top surface of the rear end of the rib 13 isinclined downward and adapted to enter a hole in a chimney and to serve as a wedge in clamping the collar securely against the chimney, as shown in Fig. 4, so that no extraneous device is required for fastening the collar to the chimney. A piece of Stovepipe 14, that has an annular bead 15, is fitted to the rib 13, and the plate 10 fixed on its top and outer end and the plate 12 to its inside surface and inner end. A slot in the end portion of the pipe-section 14 allows the parallel sides of the plate 10 to slip into the pipe-section to be riveted fast thereto, as shown in Fig. 4. A red 16, having a hook 17 at one end and a screw at its other end, is extended through the groove in the rib 13 and a nut 18 placed on-the screw. A-collar 19 is placed on the inner end of the pipe-section 14 to be engaged by the head 15 and the inclined outer portion of the rib 13 in such a manner that the bead .15 and rib 13 will engage the collar when the end of the pipe-section 14 is fixed in a Stovepipe-hole in a chimney, as shown in Fig. 4, by turning the hook 17 upward and turning the nut 18 on the screwth readed end of the rod 16, as required, to clamp the pipe section 14 and the collar fast to the chimney, as shown in Fig. 4.
To connect the pipe that extends from a stove, its top end is fitted into the outer end of the fixed piece 14 and detachably connected therewith in a common way.
Having thus described the purpose of my invention and its construction and application, its practical operation and utility will be readily understood by persons familiar with the art to which it pertains, and whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a stovepipe-thimble, the combination of a pipe, a wedge-shaped member provided with two flanges, one of which is adapted to be secured on the exterior of said pipe, and the other flange adapted to be secured on the interior of said pipe, and a securing-rod carried by said wedge-shaped member and provided at one end with a hook and at its other end with a screw-thread adapted to be engaged by a nut.
2. A stovepipethimble, for jointly fasten- -IOO ing a Stovepipe and a Stovepipe-collar to a end and a screw at its other end andastove chimney, consisting of a piece of pipe, a pipe-collar, arranged and combined as shown wedge shaped member provided with two and described for the purposes stated.
flanges, one of which is adapted to be secured BERT A. STOCKING. 5 to the exterior of the pipe and the other flange Witnesses:
to the interior, a passage-way in said wedge- J. M. GRAHAM,
shaped member, a rod having a hook at one I S. A. GRAHAM.
