To ALL WHOM 1T MAY consumi:4 v
Be it known that I, ALBERT A. YONG, of Boston, in the county of Suliolk, and State'ot Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brushes; and I hereby declare that thefollowing is a full and exact description` thereof, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference.
marked thereon, making a part of this specification, of which- Figure 1 is a top View of the invention. Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectionoi` the same. Figure 3 is a transverse section of the same. The letter A represents the body of the brush; B, the handle; C, the plate xaed to the body A; D,'its
circular portion, and 'a the holesin the same; E, the lever or plateiixed to the handle B; F, its hinge, and
its swivelling abutment; Gr, the spring-bolt, and c the turning-screw of the abutment. I
.My invention consists in providing a brush with a handle turning' on a pivot laterally over the face of a circular strip, and provided with holes, and fastened to the handle by a screw or other device, so that the body of the brush may be diagonal at right angles, or in the same straight line with respect tothe handle, and also by another device, thelhandle being perpendicular to thebody of the brush.
And in order that others may understand thve nature and use of my invention, and be enabled to manufacture the same, I will proceed to explain it.
Fig. 1, in the accompanying'drawings, gives a to'p view ot' the invention. The body of the brush, with the bristles or dusting-material, is made in the ordinary way of making brushes. But on the back or top of the brush I fasten a metallic or other suitable plate, as O. This plate has a circular portion, as D, and this circular plate has screw-holes, as a. The object of this circular plate is evident. The lever E, xed to the handle B, is
turned laterally, andV at any desirable angle may he screwed or fastened to the circular portion ot' the plate, and thus the handle becomes diagonal to the brush, and often'of great convenience. By examining the figures further, a hinge, F, will be perceived, which has also a swivelling-abutment, as Z. The object here is to raise the handle perpendicular to the body of the brush, 'and in order that the handle thus raised may be rm, I have placed a springbolt, as G, which springs'up closely on one side of the lever of the handle, and thislever is secured by the screw to theswivelling abutment, and thus I have the handle in another position with respect to the brush. Instead-,ot` the holes and the screw at the circular port-ion of the plate, I may use a slot in the plate, and a thumb-screw, or any convenient fastening. I-may use also a catch in securing the handle to the swivelling abutment, and also the handle Vto the body, instead of ascrcw. Beneath the spring-bolt is a spiral spring, which keeps the bolt in position.
By the above devices, I have constructeda brush with ahandle which is diagonal at right angles, and perpendicular to the body 'of the brush; and i I What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent as applied to brushes, is-
1. The combination and arrangement of the circular plate D with the plate of the handle E, whereby the handle is placed at right angles, and also diagonally to the body of the brush, substatially iu the manner andvfor the purpose above set forth.` l l I 2. I claim the combination and arrangement of the hinge Fwith its swivelling abutment b, the turningscrew c, and the spring-bolt G, whereby the handle is raised and secured perpendicular tothe body of the brush,
substantially in the manner and for the purpose above set forth.
3. I claim the combination and arrangement of the brush-handle B with the other parts of the brush, whereby the handle may be used in adia'gonal, reversible, 'and perpendicular position, and also at right angles with respect to the body of the brush, substantially in the manner and for the'purpose above set forth.
ALBERT A. YOUNG.
