PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM CAREY BROWN, OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY.
SPUR ATTACHMENT FOR LEGGINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Eatent No. 740,226, dated September 29, 1903. Application filed November 19, 1901 Serial No. 82,830. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
BeitknOWnthatLWILLIAMOAREYBROWN, captain in the United States Army, at present stationed at Fort Washakie, in the county of Fremont and State of Wyoming, haveinvented a new and Improved Spur Attachment for Leggings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved spur attachment for leggings, such as used by cavalrymen and other horsemen, the attachment permitting the user to conveniently and quickly remove the yoke and rowel from the supporting member whenever the user wears the leggings while walking or riding under circumstances that render spurs undesirable, the attachment also permitting immediate attachment of the yoke and rowel whenever it is desired to use the spur for its legitimate purposes.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claim.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanyingdrawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement as applied. Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a face view of the spur-sup port and the yoke-receiving plate, and Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the lock-bar.
A strap of leather or other flexible support A has its upper end permanently secured to a. legging B, preferably at the inside thereof and at the rear of the legging, as plainly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and on the dependentering correspondingly-shaped apertures in the bottom plate D of the yoke D. The pins F project somewhat beyond the outer face of the bottom plate D, and the projecting ends of by the user to turn the lock-bar to move it in and out of engagement with the said pins F.- When the lock-bar G is swung clear of the pins F, the yoke D can be lifted ofi the pins, and thus detached from the plate 0 and its flexible support A. G engages the pins F, the yoke D is securely held in place on the plate (lend its support A to permit of using the spur in its legitimate manner. A pin G inthe handle G (see Figs. 2'and 4) is adapted to snap into a registering aperture 0' (see Fig. 3) at the time the lock-bar G is in engagement with the pins F to prevent the lock-bar from accidentally turning, and consequent loosening of the spur at the time the latter is in use.
By providing the legging with the support A, depending from its lower edge, the spur will beheld in about the same position with respect to the foot that spurs are ordinarily held.
When the horseman does not require the spur, it is only necessary for him to turn the lock-bar Gand move it out of engagement with the pins F to permit of removing the yoke and its rowel from the plate C. The yoke carrying the rowel can then be convenientlyplaced in the pocket or otherwise stored until the use of the spur is again required.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination with a legging having a member projecting from its lower edge, of a plate secured to said member and provided with pins projecting therefrom, a yoke having apertures in its bottom plate to receive the pins, a rowel mounted in the yoke, and a locking-bar pivoted at about its center to the bottom plate of the yoke and provided with notches to receive the said pins, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM CAREY BROWN. Witnesses:
C. LININGEE, E. A. CARTER.
