UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM E. TILDEN, or CLEVELAND, oHIo.
SAW.
SPECIFICATION forming parc of Letters Patentivo. 739,457, dated september' 22', 1903.
' 'Application filed May 6.1902. serial No. 106,192. oro model.)
To all whom t may concern-f Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. TILDEN, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of Cleveland, 'county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Saws, of which the following is a specication, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best Inode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
My invention relates to saws, and particularly to butchers saws, its object being to provide such saws' with means whereby a removable blade may be quickly and easily removed and replaced in an efficacious manner.
. Said invention consists of means hereinafter fully described, and particularly set forth in the claims.
The'annexed drawings and the following description set forthv in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of lthe invention may be used.
Figure l represents a side elevational view of a butcher-s saw embodying my invention. Fig.V 2 represents a perspective view of the outer end of the saw-"frame, and Fig. 3 a per-L spective view of the' inner end of such frame,
- to which latter the saw-handle is secured.
said slot a4.
Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of a le-y lindrical bearing portion c, which is provided with a slot c and is adapted to seat and turn upon bearing-surface, the two slots a4 and c registering with each other in such position of said lever. The inner end of the saw-blade near the frame.
extends through said slots and is provided with a transverse pin h. The cylindrical bearing portion of said lever is further pro- 5o vided with a transverse slot c2, intersecting vits cylindrical surface and terminating intermediately of the cylinder-axis and said surface. VSaid slot c2 is adapted to receive and secure the pin b eccentrically relatively to the fulcrum-axis of the lever-that is, the cylinder-aXis. Said lever is formed with two arms 0 3 and c4, angularly located relatively to each otherarm c4 being elongated and provided with a stud c5, adapted to project into 6o a hole formed in the under side of the inner end of the handle D. The angularity of said two arms is made substantially equal to that between said under side of the handle and the contiguous frame portion. Y
When it is desired to insert a blade into the saw, lever C is turned down, as shown in dotted lines in Fig.' 1, which action brings slot c2 upon the under side of the lever and The blade'is now inserted 7o in slots ci' c and @4,'pins h and bL being caused to engage a notch o? and slot c2, respectively. The lever is now turned upwardly into the position shown in full lines, Fig. l, thereby drawing the blade into place, springing the 75 frame and so securing the blade tightly in its proper position. The lever as a result of its described angular form fits the frame, lateral displacement of arm c4 being prevented by stud c5.
Other modes of applying the-principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any one of the following claims or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.
l therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention- 1. A saw comprising the combination of a 9ol handle, fuloiumed upon the said frame and adapted to secure the saw-blade.
Signed by me this 5th day of May, 1902.
VILLIAM E. TILDEN.
gaging said blade, and formed with an angular arm adapted to lie longitudinally along the bottoni surface of the said handle.
2. The saw, as described, comprising the combination of the handle and frame, the i'emovable blade, and the lever C located below Attest: the handle formed With the angulai1 arm c4 D. T. DAVIES,
A. E. MERKEL.
adapted to lie along` the bottoni surface of said
