SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 739,226, dated'september 15, 1903 Application filed May 28, 1903, Serial Nor 159,185. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSMER W. SANBORN, a citizen of the U11 itedStates, residing at Hewins, in the county ofv Chautauqua and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety Snap-Hooks,'of'which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to snap-hooks of the safety type for use in connection with harness generally or for other purposes;-, and the object of the same is to provide an efficient and durable snap-hook which may be easily and quickly operated to engage or release a deprevent movement thereof.- 7 I The invention further consists in the details of construction and arrangement of the several parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1' is a perspective view of a snap-hook embodying the features of the invention and shown open. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section thereof, showing the mousing-piece or latch closed.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the views.
The numeral 1 designates the shank of the hook, having a loop or eye 2 at one end for attaching purposes, and at the opposite end ahook 3 of practically circular form projects from the shank and has a slot or bifurcation 4 formed therein, in which a mousing-piece or latch 5, corresponding in curvature to the members of the hook 3, is pivotallymounted for rotating movement, the pivot 6 passing through the mousing-piece or latch 5 at a point near the center thereof.
To limit the opening movement of the mousing-piece or latch 5, the latter is formed with a shoulder 7 to engage the lower reduced end 8 of a catch 9, depressible into the shank and lower portion of the'hook 3. The upper terminal of the catch 9 has a flat spring 10 extending rearwardly therefrom and secured to the shank 1 adjacent to the eye or loop 2/ The spring 10 projects upwardly and operates to restore the catch to normal position. At the point where the forward extremity of the spring 10 joins the upper end of the catch an angularly-disposed face 11 is formed for al-' lowing a clearance for the terminal of the closing extremity 12 of the mousing-piece or latch'5. .When the mousing-piece or latch 5 isclosed, the lower end thereof is engaged by the lower reduced terminal'S of the catch 9, as clearly shown by Fig.2, and in order to release the mousing-piece or latch it is necessary to depress the spring 10 and catch 9 to clear the extremity 8 from the lower end of said piece or latch. After such clearance or disengagement of the catch from the mousing-piece or latch the latter may be opened, v
as shown by Fig. 1, and a ring, loop, or other device may be freely inserted in the hook 3.
When the mousing-piece or latch is open, the
lower portion thereof projects upwardly With-' in'the opening of the hook 3, and a pressure on said projecting part of the mousing-piece or latch by the ring, loop, or other device placed in engagement with the book will spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described theinvention, what is claimed as new is- 1. A snap-hook, comprising a shank witha hooked extremity, a mousing-piece rotatably mounted in said extremity, and a-spring-ac: tuated catch arranged to engage both extremities'of the mousing-piece. A
9. A snap-hook, having a shank with a slotted hooked extremity, a mousing-piece rotatably mounted in said extremity and provided With a shoulder, and a'spring-actuated catch arranged to engage the extremities of the mousing-piece and also the shoulder of the latter.
