COMBINED on. STOVE AND LAMP.-
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 738,968, dated September 15, 1903.
Application filed October 16, 1901. Serial No. 78,850. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.- A
Be it known that I, J ONES WISTER, a citizen of the United States, residing inPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a Combined Oil Stove and Lamp, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an oil orvapor burning stove with an attachment whereby it can be used also as a lamp. This object I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, the figure in which represents in vertical section a combined oil stove and by the stove.
lamp constructed in accordance with my invention.
1 represents the fountain, and 2 the burner, of an oil or vapor stove of any appropriate character capable of producing a Bunsen flame at the burner. Projecting above the fountain of the stove are strips 3, which have lugs 3, constituting the ordinary supports for the kettle, pan, or other vessel to be heated The strips 3 also have projecting lugs 4, and upon the latter rests a chimney 5 of glass or other transparent material and of any suitable height above the lugs 3,
this chimney supporting a perforated hood 6, from which depends awire 7, carrying amantle 9, which is to be rendered incandescent by the heat from the burner 2, the lower end of this mantle fitting into a tube 10, which is supported upon the burner 2 in any available manner. A space equal to the thickness of the strip 3 intervenes between the chimney 5 and the fountain of the lamp, through-which space passes the air to support combustion at the burner. v
By means of the chimney 5,extending above the supports 3 for the cooking vessel and provided with a hood 6, the heat of the burner is so confined that no difficulty will be experienced in heating the mantle 9 to the proper condition of high incandescence, the chimney and its hood, with depending mantle, however, being readily applied or removed without change in any part of the stove structure. Hence the latter can be readily adapted for use as a lamp or as readily restored to service as a stove. The hood 6 is preferably formed with a dished or concave center and a flat ring, so that it is available as a supplementary support for a kettle or other culinary vessel when it is desired 'to use the structure both as a lamp and a stove, the waste products of combustion from the mantle 9 in this case escaping partially through the perforations of the hood and partially beneath the edges of the same, so as to heat the vessel placed upon the hood.
Having thus described my invention, I
ent 7 1: The combination of a stove having a burner from which the heating-flame issues, supports for mounting a cooking vessel above said burner, a mantle supported above the burner and extending above the supports of the cooking vessel, a chimney surrounding said mantle, and a hood above said chimney and adjacent to the upper end of the mantle, substantially'as specified.
' 2. The combination of a stove having a burner from which the heating-flame issues, supports for mounting a cooking vessel above said burner, a chimney extending above said supports, a hood supported upon said chimney, and a mantle depending from said hood and supported above the burner of the stove in a position adjacent to the hood, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of a stove having a burner from which the heating-flame issues, supports for mounting a cooking vessel above said burner, a mantle supported above the burner and extending above said supports for the cooking vessel, a chimney surrounding said mantle, and a perforated hood above said chimney and adjacent to the upper end of the mantle, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
