Be it known that LTHOMAS A. REIDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Transom-Lifters, of which the following, when taken in connection with the drawings accompanying and forming a part hereof, is a full and complete description sufficient'to enable those skilled in the art to understand, make, and use the same.
This invention relates to apparatus by means of which transoms are locked in a closed position and are opened or partially opened and locked in such opened or partiallyopened position.
The object of this invention is to obtain a transom-lifter by means of which large and heavy transoms may be opened and controlled by a single individual and such transoms may be locked in a determined position.
In the drawings accompanying and forming a part hereof, Figure 1 is a side elevation of an apparatus embodying this invention attached to a transom with the transom closed, showing a portion of the frame of the transom in section. Fig. 2 is a sectional view, on an enlarged scale, of the lower end of the base of the transom-lifter, showing in elevation a portion of the movable lever forming an element in the apparatus and the spring-bolt engaging therewith.
A reference-letter applied to designate a given part is used to indicate such part throughout both figures of the drawings wherever the same appears.
A is the ceiling, to which the base C of the apparatus is attached.
B is a transom; b, the hinge thereof.
C is an upright, preferably a tube-as, say, a gas-pipe-secured at its upper end in base C, as by ordinary screw-threads.
C Fig. 2, is a slot in the lower end of the upright C, and D'is a lever extending through such slot 0 and pivotally secured in place, as by the pivot d. Lever D is provided with the notched part or portion 01, concentric with the pivot d,and E is a spring-bolt secured in the lower end of the upright C to engage with the notched portion of the lever D. Spring-bolt E comprises the bolt 2, having end e, engageable with the respective notches in part cl of the lever D, the spring 6 abutting at one end against the collar e on bolt 6 and at the other end against the plug a, which is rigidly secured in the lower end of the upright C.
e is a bent portion of bolt 6, to which bent portion a cord, as E, Fig. 1, may be attached.
F is preferably a tube pivotally attached at one end to one end of lever D, as by pivot f, and at the other end provided with the setscrewf, arranged to engage with rod G to hold such rod G in a fixed position relative to the tube F. The adjustment between tube F and rod G having been once obtained fora given transom, such adjustment is not thereafter ordinarily required to be changed.
G is a base secured to the transom B, as by the screws or bolts g. Rod G is pivotallyattached to the base G, as by the pivot g.
At the free end of the lever D hole d is provided, and H is a rod forming a handle, provided atits upper end with the hook h, such hook engageable in the hole 61 of the lever D.
When the transom-lifter is in the position thereof illustrated in Fig. l of the drawings,
the transom to which itis attached is locked in a closed position thereby. To open or partially open such'transom, hook it of handle H is placed in hole 61 of lever D, cord E is drawn to disengage the end 6 of springbolt E from the notchesin part d of lever D, and the handle H is then drawn downward, thereby turning the lever D on pivotd until the transom B is raised into a desired position, when the spring-bolt E is released and end 6 thereof is again yieldingly forced into one of the notches of the notched portion d of lever D. Such transom is thereby maintained in its determined position. The handle H may then be disengaged from lever D.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- V 1. In a transom-lifter, the combination of an upright, attached to aceiling, alever pivotally attached to the upright, such lever provided with a notched part concentric to the pivot thereof, lugs attachable to a transom, a connection between such lugs and one end of the pivoted lever, and a handle by means of which the pivoted lever is actuated, with a bolt yieldingly held in engagement with the notches of the notched part of the pivoted lever; substantially as described.
2. In a transom-lifter, the combination of an upright, attached to a ceiling, a lever pivotally attached to the upright, such lever provided with a notched part concentric to the pivot thereof, a bolt yieldingly held in engagement with the notches on the pivoted lever, rods attached to one end of the pivoted lever and lugs for attaching the rods to the transom, and a handle by means of which the pivoted lever is actuated; substantially as described.
3. In a transom-lifter, the combination of an upright attached to a ceiling, a lever pivotally attached to the upright, such lever provided with a notched part concentric to the pivot thereof, a bolt yieldingly held in engagement with the notches on the pivoted lever, a tube attached to one end of the pivoted lever, a rod, lugs for attaching the rod to the transom, such rod fitting in the tube and longitudinally movable therein with means to maintain such rod and tube in an adjusted position, and a handle by means of which the pivoted lever is actuated; substantially as described.
