PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. MEISS, OF WEST ETNA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO E. J. RIFFLE, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 737,433, dated August 25, 1903.
Application filed March 10, 1903. Serial No. 147,109. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that LWILLIAM lLMEIss,a citizen of the United States of America, residing at West Etna, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in renches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in wrenches; and the primary object of the invention is to provide means for rapidly and easily adjusting one of the jaws of thewrench so as to vary or regulate the space between the two jaws of the wrench, as may be required for use on different-sized nuts.
My improved wrench is of that type generally known as monkey-Wren ches, though it may be used as a pipe-wrench, owing to the attachment which is secured to the wrenchshank and lies in front of one of the jaws.
In my improved construction the wrenchshank proper is made movable, together with the outer jaws, toward and away from the inner jaw, the latter being held on the supplemental shank, which is secured in the Wrenchhandle. Means is connected to the inner jaw for engagementwith the wrench-shank whereby the two shanks are bound together and se cured in the adjusted position, all of this construction to be hereinafter more fully described and specifically pointed out in the claims, and in describing the invention in deimproved wrench, showing in dotted lines the wrench-shank in position it assumes when fastening is released and the shank is adjusted. Fig. 2 isa detached detail perspective view of the attachments carried by the wrench-shank. Fig. 3 is a like view of the locking-cam. Fig. 4 is atransverse sectional view taken on the line 1 1 of Fig. 1.
To put my invention into practice, Iprovide a wrench-shank 1, provided on its inner face with teeth 2, which are adapted to engage jaw 5, a slight distance back from the working face of said jaw, is a pair of straps 10, which have pivoted in their outer ends the lockingcam 11, adapted, when in the closed position, as seen in Fig. 1 of the drawings, to hold the teeth 3 in engagement with the teeth 2. The side straps, it is to be noted from reference to Fig. 1, are placed at a slight angle to the transverse line of the wrench in order that the cam when closed firmly draws the teeth into engagement. I preferably attach to the wrenchshankl a toothed block 12, which may be detachably secured thereto byside straps or arms 14, fastened to the shank 1 near the outer jaw 15 by means of the bolt and set-screw 16, and cam 11 is actuated whereby to permit the dis engagement of the teeth 2 and 3, so that the shank 1 may be moved outwardly toward the cam and then moved longitudinally until the desired adjustment has been obtained, when it is fastened by closing the cam into position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The supplemental toothed jaw 12 permits the use of the wrench for pipewrench, if desired, and when this supplemental toothed jaw is removed the two plane-surfaced jaws are provided.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a wrench, a longitudinally-movable jaw provided with a jaw at its outer end, a handle in which said shank is adapted to slide at its inner end, guide-pins carried by said shank and operating in slots provided therefor in-the handle, teeth on the inner face of said shank, a supplemental shank fixed in the handle and provided with teeth, a jaw carried by said supplemental shank at its in the said Way, pins carried by the said shank operating in the said slots, a supplemental fixed shank, said shanks having their continuous edges formed with teeth, jaws carried by the said shanks, and means for securing the said shanks together.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
WVILLIAM H. 1 MEISS.
