speci-'Freemen forming part of Letters :Patent N. 737,351, dated Auges# 2 5, iefoe.
' Aplicaion mea February 6,1993. serai 110.142.197. N0 maar To a/ZZ Whom it may concern: i Beit known that I, JOHN HENRY CLEMENTS; of Coperas Cove, in the county of Ooryell and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sash-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in devices designed for locking a window-sash at any desired position ,its object being to provide a sash-lock that is simple, cheap, and
effective in operation.
A further object isto provide a device which may be 'applied to a window-frame to lock the sash without defacing the frame or sash and one which may be applied to windows already in use,
A further object is to do away 'with the 'use of weights to hold the sash at any elevation and provide in their place a device which will be equally as effective..
My'in'vention consists in certain novel features of construction and the particular com:- bination and arrangement of parts, as willbe hereinafter fully described, and-pointed out in the claim. f
In the drawings, vFigure lis a perspective View showing my improvement in use. Fig.
2 is a vertical longitudinal viewof the same.
Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of the guide-rod. Fig. iis an inverted perspective View of the apertured plate. Fig. 5 is a detached detail perspective view of the clutchloop. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a slightlydierent form of guide-rod. f
A represents a window-frame of the usual construction, but without weightboxes and pulleys, as they are rendered unnecessary by the use of my device. The usual guide-beads are used, between which the sashes are adaptedtallyithe'pivots or trunnions ctc', is passed through the opening in the plate B from the rear, the pivots ttinginf the sockets b b thereof. The opening through the yoke or clutchtothe window-casing, as shown, the cross-section of said rod being also oblong. Said rod is perfectly straight throughout nearly its entire length, but near each end it is, provided with bends e e, one of whichlmay be angular, but
the other one must be curved to permit the ,passing of the clutch-loop over it onto the main portion of the rod. If desired, both ends 4in a perfectly horizontal position it will slide freely'up-and down on said rod.
The various parts of the d evice having been `properly assembled, to operate'the sash it is simply necessary to grasp the knob 'or handle hsecured to the center of thelower rail of the lowerv sash with one hand and the clutchloop C with the other, holding the said loop horizontal, and raise bothztogether, whereupon the clutch-loop will slide freely upon the rod E until vlthe ,sash has been raised to its desired height, when 'the .hold on the knob 4h and clutch-lock C is released. The-weightl of the sash will then be thrown on the clutchloop audit will rock on its pivots c c by reason of lthe opening through the plate being larger than the height of the loop C, throwing it out of its horizontal'position and cause two ofthe inner walls ofthe opening through the clutch-loop to bind against the rod AE on opposite sides, the rear wall-.of `the opening binding at its lower edge and the fr'n't wall binding against the rod at its upper edge, and thus securely clamp or lock the sash against downward movement. When it is desired to lower the sash again, the clutch-loop is brought to its horizontal position again by one hand and the sash lowered by the other handV pressing downwardly on knob or handle h.
Sloop C is oblong and fits onthe rod E, secured` IOO The various parts may be made of cast steel, iron, or other suitable metal and ornainented as desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a Window frame and sash, of a rectangular rod secured to the frame by curved bends at the ends, a rectangularlyapertured plate secured to the sash having curved sockets in its rear face, horizontal and Vertical ilanges surrounding the aperture on the outer face of the plate, the inner Walls of the horizontal flanges being beveled, a clutohloop of less area than the aperture in the plate having a rectangular central aperture,
said clutch-loop passed through the apertured plate from the rear, and circular pivots or trunnions projecting horizontally from each side of the loop at its rear end and adapted to iit and rock in the sockets in the rear face of the apertured plate, whereby said clutch-loop Will be adapted to slide on the rectangular rod, When held in a horizontal position and to rook on its pivots and bind on opposite faces of the rod by downward pressure of the sash to lock said sash at any desired height.
