Description

No. 734,180. 7 PATENTED JULY 21, 1903. M. E. KANAL Y.
PICTURE HANGER AND GAS- COOK TURNER.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 8, 1903.
N0 MODEL.
UNITED STATES Patented July 21, 1903.
0 FFICE.
ATENT PICTURE-HANGER AND GAS-COCK TURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 734,180, dated July 21, 1903.
Applicationfiled May 8, 1903. Serial No. 156,232. (No model.)
drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to a combined picturehanger and gas-cock turner; and it consists in certain novel features of construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be readily understood by reference to the description of the accompanying drawings and to the claims hereto appended and in which my invention is clearly pointed out.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a planof my improved picture-hanger and gas-cock turner. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the sameand illustrating its application to the hanging or nnhanging of a picture which is suspended from a picture-molding through the medium of a detachable hook. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the same and illustrating its applicationto hanging or unhanging pictures the supports for which are nails. Fig. 5 is a vertical sec tion on line A A on Figs. land 3, and Fig. 6 is an elevation illustrating'its application to the turning of gas-cocks.
The hanging and unhanging of pictures as ordinarily practiced is a somewhat laborious operation, especially if the room in which they are to be hung is of considerable height, for the reason that a:chair, steps, or other makeshift has to be employed to enable the operator to reach the molding and place the picture-hook thereon and then to place the picture cord or wire upon the hook or to place the cord or wire on the nail when nails are used instead of the molding and hook.
The object of my invention is to obviate the necessity of resorting to such makeshifts and render it practical for a person to hang or unhang a picture on a nail or on a molding by means of a hook or to change the position of the hook on the molding whilestanding on the floor, and to this end I construct my picture-hanger as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which 1 represents a portion of the stafi or handle of the implement, which may be of any desired length according to the in Fig. 3.
height of the room where it is to be used, to one end of which is fitted and firmly secured a metal head 2, having the tubular shank 3 to embrace the end of the staff and having formed in its upper end the rectangular recess 4,through the opposite side walls of which are cut the slightly-tapering slits 5, which extend downward to the bottom of said recess 4, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, said recess 4 being constructed and arranged to receive the lower end of the picture-hook 6, (indicated by dotted lines in Figs. 2, 3, and 5,) and the slits 5 receive the picture-cord 7 in position to rest upon the lower end of the hook 6, said cord being indicated by dotted lines in Figs. 2, 4:, and 5. The head 2 is also provided with two forwardly-projecting arms 8, which extend obliquely downward and then obliquely upward in the form of hooks, upon which the picture-cord is suspended when a picture is being hung upon or unhung from a nail.
, The slits 5 in the side walls of the recess 4 serve to engage the thumb-pad of a gas-cock for the purpose of turning the same, as illustrated in Fig. 6.
The operation of my invention is as follows: When it is desired to hang a picture where a hook and a molding are the means of support, the cord-receiving end of the book 6 is placed in the recess 4, as shown in Fig. 3, the cord 7 after -being secured by its ends to opposite sides of the frame of the picture is placed by the middle of its length in the slits 5, so as to rest upon the lower end of the hook 6, and then the operator by moving the staff with its head upward lifts the picture to the desired height and drops the upper end of the hook 6 into engagement with the picture-molding 9, as indicated in dotted lines When it is desired to take down or unhang a picture so hung, the hanger is passed upward beneath the hook till the lower end of the hook 6 is engaged by the bottom of the recess 4 and the slits 5 engage the cord 7, when the picture is raised sufiiciently to disengage the hook from the molding, andv then the picture is lowered till grasped by the operator. 'If the picture is to be hung upon a nail, the central portion of the cord is placed upon the hook-shaped arms 8 with the implement turned so that said arms project toward the rear of the picture and the wall of the room, when the picture is raised till said arms pass above said nail, one on either side thereof, and then it is lowered until the cord rests upon said nail and the picture is suspended therefrom, and to unhang the same the operation is reversed.
This implement is perfectly adapted to be used for opening and closing gas-cocks when located at an inconvenient height for operating by hand by applying it to the gas-cock, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 6.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-- 1. Acombined picture-hanger and gas-cock turner, comprising a staff and a metal head secured thereto said head having formed in its upper end a recess adapted to receive and hold a picture-hook in an upright position, and having the two side walls of said recess cut through from top to bottom to form slits to receive the picture-cord, as set forth.
2. In a combined picture-hanger and gascock turner, the combination of the staff 1; the head 2 provided in its upper end with a recess adapted to receive a picture-hook and hold it in an upright position, and with the slits 5 to receive the picture cord or the thumb-pad of a gas-cock; and the hook-arms 8, all constructed arranged, and operating substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 5th day of May, A. D. 1903.
