Be it known that I, ROBERTM. FRYER, of the city, county,an'd State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Pumps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and' exact description thereof', .which will enable othersskilled in the art to malte and use the same, reference being 'had tothe accompanying dravv'ingmrepresenting', in'- v Figure 1, a transversal section of my improved pump, through the line-'x x', and in `Figure 2 a longitudinal section ofthe same, through the line z z'.
This invention has for its object to-obtain a' pump, which, by being free from 'the objections of a pump blowing pif air with its water, will furnish a-steady-and solid stream -of water; and my attention has also been directed toward producing a pump not affected by the gravel or any sediment which may-he sueh'ed up by the receiving-valve. v

In'double-actingpumps, I connect these valves by pass-pipes, and place thereon air-receivers, in the ordinary manner. The top, U, of the chamber P is conical, and itis `surmounted by a small chamber, F, packed with pieces of sponge, to form what I call my porous diaphragm. `K is a valve-box, in which there is a small valve, openin'g upward, as a. delivery-valve. is the pipe, leadinl from the valve-box K to the air-separating reservoir-M. S" and S" are small cocks, one at top the other'at bottom of the reservoir hLby means of which the liquid accumulating in the' reservoir M can be drawn olf, and' the air'can be expelled by the top cock S as fast as it accumulates. -The advuntages'of myimproved pump are easily appreciated if we examine its mode of working, as it is -evident thatif any air is, admitted by the receiving-valve in theval'vc-:fbex S', it will, as represented byf in iig. 2, rise `at once to the top of the chamber P, in the-space U, toV bc forced out through the porous diaphragm 'in the chamber F, thevulve ofthe valre-box K, and pipe L, when the pressure is applied to that end ofthe pump; When any gravel or other impurities arealso admitted lby the valve-chamber S', it will gravitate, as indicated by the letters a d a, in the iig., 1, land be collected in the reservoir E.A W'hen the piston is reversed, and that pressure exerted on this side of the pump, the air is expelled, as already stated, and the water alone will pass out through the delivery-valve chamber T, for the opening into 'thatchamber is too low to admit of any air escaping'through it, and-too high for any sediment/to be ejected through it, so that a perfect solid stream of water will be the result.

I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1.
