AUGUST s. HELD-,OF FREEPO'RT, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED MOP AND SCRUB-BRUSH;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 732,744, dated J u1y.7, 1903.
Application filed October 10,1963. strain). 126,654. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, AUGUST S. HELD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Freeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Mop and Scrub-Brush, of which the following is a specification.
' This invention has for its object the production of combined mopsand scrub-brushes, so contrived and arranged that they may be used both in such combination and separately; and it consists of certain new and useful features of construction and combinations of parts especially devised to these ends, all as hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a combined mop and scrub brush embodying my invention and scrubbing. Fig. 2 is a section at thedotted line 2 2 in Fig. l of parts thereshown. is a like section, also at such dotted line 2 2 in Fig. 1, showing the movable jaw of the mophead thrown away from its fixed jaw by means of its controlling lever in orderthat the brush-attaching plate thereof, with its brush, may be detached therefrom. Fig. 4 is an isometrical detail of the brush-attaching plate. Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are views showinga modified form of one of the elements (indicated by the letter B composing the utensil illustrated in the foregoing views.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the severalviews.
A is a mop-handle.
B is a fixed clamping-jaw provided with a.
handle-socket l3 andhaving achannel B extending along lengthwise of the lower and straight edge thereof, and attaching-flanges B projecting laterally therefrom,
O is a brush-attaching plate, having hooks C on one edge thereof, adapted to engage with either edge of the channel 13 in the fixed jaw B, and provided with an upwardly-extending resilient member 0 having depressions C therein, adapted to engage with and bedisengaged from the attaching-flanges B on the Fig. 3.
fixed clamping-jaw Bby virtue of its resiliency.
D is ascrub-brush, secured by means of screws D to the brush-attachingplate O.
E is a movable clamping-jaw parallel with the fixed jaw B, having its ends E extending on the ring F and having openings G therathrough to admit and pivotally connect with the ends E of the movable jaw E.
H is a coiled spring encircling the handle A, compressible between the fixed clampingjaw B and slidable ring F and normally acting to force the movable jaw E toward the fixed jaw B. I
I is a mop inserted between the jawsB and E.
A pintle J may be insertedthrough the handle A or an equivalent device beattached to such handle in place of 'the'flanges B on the fixed clamping-jawB without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
By pressing the'thumbs upon the member O at O of the attaching-plate O the latter may be disengaged first from the flanges B on the fixed jaw B and then from the channel 13 therein, thus leaving the .mo'p and brush to be used separately, if desired.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- l 1. In a utensil of the class described, in combination, a fixed clamping-jaw, havinga channel extending along lengthwise of the lower and straight edge thereof attaching means located abovesaid jaw, a brush-atstantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a utensil of the class described, in combination, a fixed clamping-jaw, havinga channel extending along lengthwise of the lower and straight edge-thereof and attaching-flanges projecting laterally therefrom, a brush-attaching plate having hooks, on one edge thereof, adapted to engage with either edge of the channel in the fixed jaw, and provided with an upwardly'extending resilient member having depressions therein adapted to engage with and be disengaged from the [O attaching-flanges, on the fixed clamping-jaw,
by virtue of its resiliency, and a scrub-brush fast to the brush-attaching plate, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of [5 two subscribing witnesses.
AUGUST S. HELD. Witnesses:
JOHN M. IRWIN, W. H. J. STRATTON.
