CHARLES H. SMITH, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO AGNES F. ROWE, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
DRINKING-FOUNTAIN.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent N 0. 731,517, dated June 23, 1903.
Application filed April 20, 1903. Serial No. 153,355. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. SMITH, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in DrinkingFountains; and I do hereby declare the following,
when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a side View, partially in section, of a fountain constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a perspective View of the cup with the cap attached thereto removed.
This invention relates to an improvement in drinking-fountains--that is, devices for schools and other public places where the use of glasses or cups is to be avoided-the object of the invention being to increase the sanitary qualities of a fountain and to produce one in which the possibility of a drinkers face being injured by coming in contact with a portion of the fountain is avoided; and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claims.
Preferably, and as herein shown, the fountain consists of a base 2, adapted to be socured in and rest upon the bottom of a sink or other convenient place. Rising from this base is an upright post 3, provided with a hollow head 4., with which connection is made to the source of water-supply. Above the head is a cup or shell 5, closed by a cap or plate 6, the cap or plate being substantially flat and provided with a central opening 7. The cap may be formed integral with the shell or formed independently thereof and secured to the shell by screws 8 or other suitable means. Within the shell is a nozzle 9, from which water will be projected through the opening 7. In the supply-pipeI preferably arrange a lock-valve "10, by which the force, of water discharged from the fountain may be regulated, and, if desired, a cut-off valve 11 may be provided between the lockvalve and the fountain, permitting the water to be cut oif from the fountain, except when required for use. The supply-pipe may be connected with the service-pipe inside the point where a usual faucet 12 is attached, so that water may be drawn from the faucet in the usual manner and not interfere with or be affected by the use of the fountain. Water being admitted to the fountain is discharged through the opening 7 and falls over the surface of the cap, continually cleaning.
that surface and removing all possible cause of infection.
The fountain is used in the same way as all otherfountains of this classthat is, the mouth is placed over the opening 7 or over the jet of water discharged through it, the surplus water falling over the edges of the cap into the sink, where it is-carried off by the usual waste-pipe.
By forming the cap fiat or substantially flat there is no surface by which the face of a drinker can be injured if the face should come in forcible contact with the cap, either accidentally or otherwise.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a drinking-fountain, the combination with a cup, of acap secured thereto, said cap having an opening, and means for discharging a jet of water through said opening, substantially as described.
2. 'A drinking-fountain comprising a post, a cup mounted at the upper end thereof, said cup closed by a cap having a substantially fiat surface and an opening therein, and
means for discharging Water through said opening, substantially as described.
3. In a drinking-fountain, the combination with a post of a head secured thereto, a. cup mounted on said head,a cap closing said cup and having a substantially fiat surface and an opening therein, a nozzle in said cup, and means for discharging water through said nozzle, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscriblng witnesses.
