TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, ICIIABOD R. Roon-RS, of Lynn, in the county of Essex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in theManufacture of Boots Aand Shoes, ot' which the following is a ful-l, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Y Figure I is a plan of an inner sole provided with a. row of stitching, by means of which the upper leather and inner sole are connected together in the operation of lasting, previous to taeliing on the outer. sole. y
Figure 2 is a plan of the same, attached to the upper of a boot er shoe. i
My invention relates to certain improvements in the method of attaching the upper leather to the inrier sole in the operation of lasting previous to taelring en the outer sole preparatory to uniting them together, for which Letters Patent of the United States were granted to Gilbert Hawkes, ou the 26th day of June, A. D. 1866; and my inventiorrconsists in an inner sole of any suitable material, provided with a row of stitches, extending along or near its centre, to which the upper may be directly sewed, thus obviating. the objections incident to tacking the upper to the inner sole, as has previously been the custom, and dispensing with the strip mentioned in the patent above referred to, whereby a saving is eieeted in the cost thereof, and the delay and inconvenience of cutting out and attaching it to the inner sole are avoided, W-hile'at the same time the operation of securing the edgeof the upper thereto is very much facilitated.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out. I l
In the said drawings, a represents a row of stitches of wax-thread, extending through the centre of an inner sole, A, of leather, or other suitable material, and executed ou any ordinary machine for sewing boots and shoes. Theinner sole, A, provided with its row of stitches, is secured iu 'place upon the last in a wellknown manner, and the upper is snugly fitted thereto by drawing it over the inner sole and sewing its edge to the-row a of stitches; the description of stitch employed in this operation being such that the stitch succeeding it will cause the upper to be drawn more tightly and -fit the last more snugly, therebypreventing the possibilityof the upper" yielding, as is common when sewed in the manner represented in the said Letters Patent of Gilbert Hawkes.
By means of my improved method of preparing the inner sole, I am enabled to introduce the needle between the stitches with much greater ease and rapidity than can be done through a strip of textile material,I when attached to the sole, partieularly'at and near the shank, where the edge of the upper" is drawn over so far as to prevent its being properly secured to the strip. i
In the foregoing description I have spoken of stitches of wax-thread sewed by machine, but it is evident that cord or twine not waxed, of any suitable size-and material, or wire, may be used, and the stitches may be made by hand if desired, without departing from the spirit of my invention; but I prefer an inner sole, ,prepared in the manner rst described.l It is evident-tirata groove may be formed in Vthe upper side of the inner sole, in order that the new of stitches maylie ev'en and Hush with the surface there-ei', thus removing any possible objectionv that may arise from the stitehesprojecting above its surface.
Claim.
What I claim as mytinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is An inner sole, of any suitable material, provided with a row of-stitchcs; a, by which the upper leather is united to it by stitches, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
