To all whom t may concern:

Beit known that LEDMUND H. DUCHEMIN, of Newark, county of Essex, State of New .l ersey, have invented an Improvement in Curtains, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a speciiication, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.

In another application iiled by ine, Serial No. 84,354, a curtain is shown adapted to be rolled,having flexible holding-strips laid upon the lateral margins thereof, which are secured thereto at their outer edges and are free or unattached at their inner edges, and stationary means-as, for instance, slideways-are provided,ad apted to hook over the inner edges of said flexible holding-strips and slidably engage the same. This curtainis especially adapted for open street-cars. Itis frequently desirable to apply the curtains to cars already in use; but usually the grooves in the posts of such cars are Very shallow and not deep enough to receive the slideways shownin my said application, and consequently this linvention has for its object to construct a slideway which is especially adapted to be inserted iu a shallow groove and be secured therein and serve as a stationary means which hooks over the inner edge of the flexible holdingstrip and slidably engages the same. In accordance with this invention the slideway is made of sheet metal bent or formed to present a dat side wall, through which screws pass to secure the slideway to the post, alsoT a hook at the outer edge of said side Wall, which engages or hooks over the inner edge of the flexible holding-strip, and also a hook at the inner edge of said side wall, which provides a suitable recess in which the outer edge of the curtain is free to work.

'Figure 1 shows in front elevation a curtain embodying this invention and its support, one of the side posts being broken away to show the slideway. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the curtain and post', taken on the dotted line 2 2, Fig. l.

The curtain a is of any usual or suitable construction adapted to be rolled on a Hartshorn or other spring-roller. At each edge of the curtain, on one side thereof, a flexible holding-strip a is secured, which is attached to the curtain at intervals along its outer edge,

leaving its inner edge free or unattached for engagement with the slideway.

b represents the usual lupright post, having a shallow groove h. The slideway is adapted to be placed in said groove and secured to the post, and as the groove is shallow said slideway will project therefrom sufficiently to provide within-it amplespace for the flexible holding-strip a to work. The slideway consists of a side wall c, a hook c at the outer edge thereof, which hooks over the inner edge of the flexible holding-strip or', and a hook o2 at the inner edge thereof, which provides a vertical recess in which works theouter edge of the curtain and the flexible holding-strip attached thereto. The slideway is placed vertically iu the groove b', with the hook c2 bottoming iu said groove, and as said groove is quite shallow the hook o will project a short distance from the post. The side wall c of theslideway is made dat and brought up against one side Wall of the groove, so as to be secured thereto, and said side wall has'holes through it through which screws c3 pass to thereby secure the slideway to the post. The

hook c is made large enough to properly en-l gage the inner edge of the flexible holdingstrip and` the hook c2 large enough to provide a recess for receiving the edge of the curtain with the ilexible holding-strip thereon, and said hook c2 serves to prevent the edge of the curtainfronr coming in direct contact with the wooden post, which would result in said post being more or less injured by Jche repeated operation of the curtain.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- A l. A curtain, flexible holding-strips attached at their outer edges to the side edges thereof having free or unattached inner edges, a slideway for each edge of the curtain, said slideways being placed in grooves in the post, and each slideway comprising a side wall and a hook at each edge thereof, substantially as described.
