PATENT OFFICE.
WATCH-BARREL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 730,103, dated June 2, 1903. Application filed January 13,1903. SerialNo.138,852. (No modelJ Beit known that I, LEwIs A. ERICKSON, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Stromsburg, in the county of Polk and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in IVatch-Barrels, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to new and useful improvements in watches, and is more especially an improvement upon the construction described and claimed in my application for patent led on December 24, 1901, Serial No. 87,148, and allowed on July 24, 1902.
It relates more especially to the barrel of the mainspring and tothe means for securing said barrel in position within the watch.
The object of the invention is to provide a barrel of simple construction within which the spring may be readily secured and to provide means whereby said barrel may be firmly attached to one of the plates of a watch.
The invention consists in providing a barrel having a flange therearound which serves to support a ring which may be secured to the plate in any suitable manner and acts as a retainer for the barrel.
The invention also consists in the further novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention,.and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the barrel and its retaining-ring, the arbor and arbor-h ub being shown in position in the center of said barrel; and Fig. 2 is a section through said barrel and ring and through the mechanism adapted to be arranged adjacent thereto] Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 and 2 are the top and bottom plates, respectively, of a watch, and journaled therein is anarbor 2, having a rectangular portion 3, adapted to project into and engage an arbor-hub 4, from the side of which projects a catch 5. This arbor-hub has a reduced cylindrical portion 6 at the lower end thereof which projects into the center of a ratchetwheel 7, revolubly mounted within a bridge 8, secured to the plate 2 and having a squared end 9, which engages a rectangular aperture 10, formed within the bottom of the springbarrel 11. This aperture has been shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and the barrel in which it is formed extends over the bridge 8 and is provided with a catch 12 upon'the inner surface of the side thereof. A flange 13 incloses the lower edge of the barrel and is adapted to be held clamped upon the bridge S by a ring 14, which may be secured to said bridge and to the plate 2 of the watch by means of screws or other suitable devices. (Not shown.) The ring 14 is provided with a recess 15, adapted to receive the center arbor 16, which bears against the two plates of the watch and is provided with wheels 17 and 18, the last-mentioned one of which meshes with a master-wheel19, secured upon the arbor 2, before referred to. The mainspring of the watch is adapted to be secured at its ends to the two catches 5 and 12. It will be seen that the ring 14 will securely hold the barrel 11 in position within the watch and can be readily placed in or removed from position upon the drum.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacricing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a watch, the combination with a spring-barrel; of a ange on said barrel, and a clamping-ring mounted upon said barrel and inclosing the flange.
2. In a watch, the combination with a plate thereof; of a spring-barrel mounted lupon said plate, a liange surrounding the barrel, and a ring upon the flange and surrounding the barrel and adapted to be secured to said plate.
3. In a watch, the combination witha plate; of a spring-barrel upon said plate, a flange Aupon the barrel at one edge thereof and surrounding the same, and a clamping-ring bearing upon said flange and surrounding the barrel, said ring being adapted to clamp the barrel in position upon the plate'.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEWIS A. ERICKSON.
