MONUMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 729,176, dated May 26, 1903.
Application filed September 28, 1901. Serial No. 76,857. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern:
Beit known that LEMERY C. HoDGEs,a citizen of the United States, residing at Farmer City, in the county of Dewitt and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Monuments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in monuments, and refers particularly to a foundation or support for the monument, the object being the provision of a foundation which will form a rigid support and prevent breaking or falling to pieces of the monument, which will make a dry foundation and prevent moss or straggling growth from the base of the monument, and which foundation will be inexpensive of production.
To attain the desired objects, my invention consists of a base or foundation of novel construction, substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure l represents a perspective view of a monument mounted upon my improved foundation; and Fig. 2 represent-s a side elevation of the monument resting on the foundation, the foundation being in section.
In the drawings, A designates a ditch, which is generally about four or ve feet deep and of round or square or rectangular shape, the walls of which are reinforced or strengthened bya suitable lining B. The lining B is of porous substance to allow water or moisture vto pass through to the earth. This ditch or hole is partially filled with the brick and cement material, which forms a solid mass C, and upon this bed or mass B, I place the layer D, of stone, which is crushed and about the size of a Walnut, this forming a firm base or support for the monument E, but providing a Y filtering-support, which will allow the water to run through and will also prevent any character of growth from surrounding the base of the monument, said base being somewhat larger in area than the base of the monument.
From the foregoing it is evident that I provide a foundation which will prove practical and reliable in every particular, which will keep the base of the monument dry, and thus prevent decay and falling to pieces of the monument, and prevent growth around the base of the monument, thus insuring an attractive and ornamental appearance under all conditions to the monument.
I claim- 1. The foundation for monuments or tombstones herein shown and described, consisting of a suitable casing, a solid foundation mass of cement and brick within said casing to support a monument or tombstone, and a layer of stone around the base of the monument or tombstone and resting on the solid mass to form a draining-surface.
2. The foundation for monuments or tombstones, consisting of a solid mass composed of cement and brick to form the foundation or support for the monument or tombstone, and a layer of stone around the base of the monument or tombstone and resting on the solid mass to form a draining-surface.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EMERY C. HODGES.
