sHAD'E-CLoTH TRIM M en SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 727,667, dated May 12, 1903.
Y Application ledDecember 8, 1902. Serial No. 134,223. (No model.)
. T0 all whom, it may con/cern: v
vember 11, 1902, by providing-- means operat-Y ing as an adjunct to the trimming-knives for cutting o the superfluous end of the'shaderoll stick.
` A further object is to provide means'whereby4 the operator' can easily determine the proper amount to be cut-from the endof the stick.
Other objects of the invention will appear lfrom the following detailedde'scription.
The invention consists generally in providing a saw in connection with the cloth-trim- 1v ming mechanism. Y
urther, the invention consists in providing meansV for rendering the saw operative or inoperative, as desired; and, further, the invention consists in a suitable gage device by means of which the desired amount to be cut from the end cf the stick can be easily and quickly determined.
. Further, the invention consists in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a plan view of my improved shade-roll trimmer. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line a: a: of Fig. 1.y Fig. 4 is a v'iew looking at the rear of the trimming mechanism, the supportinghub for the -revolving member being shown in section. Fig. 5 isl a vertical section through the cloth-trimming mechanism andthe saw. Fig. 6 is a front viewof the device, show lng the saw and knives proj ec :ed partially across the opening in the revolving disk. Fig. 7 a rearview showing the knives and saw rctracted. Fig. 8 is a detail sectional view showing the saw in its inoperative position.
otherV suitable means. Iat the inner end of the hub 3, and a revolving disk or member 7, having an operatinghandle 7 is mounted on said hub and held 65 Fig. 9 is a front view showing a modified form of, saw. Fig. 10 is a vertical section showing the knives -and an adjustable saw.
Fig. 11 .is a detail of the saw, showing the 55 means provided for preventing rotation thereof on its axis.
2 and is secured thereto byscrews or any A gear 6 is provided thereon by a ring 8, that is secured to the outer end-of said h ub and is conntersnnk in the face of said disk and permits the revolution of the diskoh the hub, while preventing their accidental separation.
disk is provided upon each side of the hub- ,opening with guideways 9, wherein blocks 10 are slidable Yand normally projected toward the opening 4 by springs 11.' Knives 12, having, preferably, V-shaped cutting edges, are 75 mounted on the blocks 10 and are normally held projecting partially across the opening 1 by the yielding pressure of said springs. The blocks 10 are provided also,
preferably on the side opposite the knives, 8o
with stops 13, having beveled edges 14, that are in position to be engaged by the corresponding faces 15 of lugs 16, provided on a ring 17, that is revoluble on the hub of the disk 7 between itand the gear 6.
erator can partially rotate said ring, move the beveled faces 15 into engagement with the corresponding faces on the stops 13, sepa- 9o rate the knives against the tension of the springs 11, and withdraw them from the open ingli to allow of insertion of the end of a shade-roll therein. After the insertion of the roll the knives are lreleased by a reverse 95 I Y Patented Maly 127 190:3".2 l Y The revolving 7o This 35 ring 17 is preferably provided with an operating-handle 18, by means of which the op- All this mechanism, however, is roo make no claim to the same herein except in combination with the novel features as hereinafter described.
Itis desirable after the cloth is trimmed to provide some means for cutting o the end of the stick, which has been usually done by a handsaw not connected with and operating entirely independent of the trimming mechanism. To perfect the trimmer and torender its operation complete, I provide a yoke or frame 19, having a stud on one side tting within an opening in the revolving disk or member 7, near the circumference thereof. A handle 2l is provided on the yoke 19, and a lug 22 is provided on the stud 2O and normally holds the stud against forward movement, but when opposite a certain predetermined point in its revolution willenter a slot 23 in the revolving member and allow the stud and yoke to be drawn forward, as shown in Fig. S. Ashaft 24 is centrally mounted in said stud and projects forward through the yoke 19 and into said handle, and upon the rear end of this shaft a pinion 25 is mounted in position to engage the teeth of the stationary gear 6 and be moved out of engagement therewith by the forward movement of Saidstud. A gear 26 is mounted on the shaft 24 within the frame 19, meshingzwith a pinion 27, mounted on a bolt 2S and carrying a circular saw 29 on its hub.
From the foregoing it is evident that when the member 7 is revolved and the pinion 25 is in engagement with the teeth of the stationary gear said pinion, in addition to its movement around the circumference of said stationary gear, will also revolve with the shaft 24, which in turn will drive the gear l26, the pinion 27, and the circular saw 29.
The saw is arranged outside the trimmingknives any suitable distance, preferably about three-eighths of an inch, and during the operation of the knives will be out of gear and inoperative, as shown in Fig. 8. When the saw is not in use, it is swung around out of the path of the shade-roll by the tension of a spring 30, connecting the yoke 19 with the revolving member. (See Figs. 6 and 7.) In the rear of the trimming mechanism upon the board 2 I provide a support or rest 3l for the roll, and along the middle of said board I arrange a plate 32, provided with a scale 33, the board beneath said scale having a recess or slot 34, wherein a gage 35 is movable, being adjustably secured to the plate 32 by a set-screw 36. The marks upon the scale represent inches and feet and will enable the operator by adjusting the gage to very easily and quickly ascertain how much to cut off the .end of the stick to obtain the desired width of shade. A plate 37 is preferably secured to the board 2, having a circular socket 38, wherein the end of the shadestick may be thrust to adj ust the edge of the cloth preparatory to trimming.
Instead of using the knives having V- shaped edges, as heretofore described, I may provide circular knives 39, mounted on pivots 40 between the brackets 41 and the reciprocating blocks l0, these knives having circular cuttin g edges that engage the cloth to trim the same, and I prefer to provide three of them and a correspondingnumber of guides 9 and blocks l0 in the revolving disk,
provide a longitndinal'slot` 43 therein to receive a lug 44, provided on the saw', that will permit adjustment of the saw longitudinally on the hub, but prevent its revolution independently thereof. The saw is locked in any desired posit-ion on .thehub by means of the lock-nuts 45. By'loosening these nuts the saw can be adjusted toward or from the knives and the length of the cut at the end of the stick varied as desired.
The operation, briefly, of my improved shade-trim mer is as follows: The knives having been-separated and withdrawn 'from the hub-opening, the end of the shade-roll-is inserted therein, with the opposite end supported upon therest 31 in a horizontal position. the proper amount to be trimmed, and the knives are then released, allowing them to fly back and engage the cloth. The disk or member carrying the knives is then revolved and the desired amount trimmed from the edge of the cloth. During this time the saw hasbeen ont of gear and inoperative. As soon, however, as the cloth is trimmed the saw is thrown into gear, the revolving member set in motion again, and the end of the stick quickly and neatly cut 0K.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, in a shade-cloth trim- The gage is then adjusted to determine mer, with a revolving member having an open- IIC 2.
