PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD CARSTEN HENRY. BEHRENS, OF CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA.
MATCH-STRIKER.
SPECIFICATION forming* part 0f Letters Patent N0. 726,845, dated May 5, 1903.
Application filed February 4, 1903. Serial No. 141,939. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD OAEs'rEN HENRY BEHRENs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charleston, in the county of Charleston and State of South Carolina, have invented a newv and useful Match- Striker, of which the following is a specication.
vThis invention relates to new and useful improvements in match-strikers, the object being to prevent the combustible material on the match from burning persons or infiammable material which might happen to come adjacent to the match.
I have illustrated my invention in thevaccompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of my matchstriker shown as applied to a match box. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view through the attachment, and Fig. 3 is an end view of said attachment.
Reference now being had to the details of the -drawings by letter, A designates a matchbox, and B designates a plate of metal having its ends bent at right angles and provided with spurs B', which in the drawings are shown as arranged in concentric circles and inwardly projecting, adapted to engage the opposite edges of the match-box. Projecting from the face'of said strip B is an open shell C, which is oblong and has flanges at its inner end engaging said plate and has perforations C' through the circumference thereof.
The portion of the strip B which is surrounded by said shell is provided with a series of spurs E, forming a rough surface on which the head of a match may be scratched.
In operation the device is applied to a box in the mannerl shown in Fig. 1, and when it is desired to scratch a match the head of the same is inserted in said shell and drawn over the roughened surface formed by the spurs E, and the surrounding wall of the shell will retain the flames as the match is ignited within the circumseribed area.
Having thus fully described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A match-lighting attachment for boxes, comprising a stripof metal B having ends bent at right angles, spurs projecting inwardly from` the bent ends of said strip, an oblon g shell having perforations therein provided with flanges at the inner end of the shell designed to engage apertures in said strip, the portion of said strip which is surrounded by the shell having series of spurs forming a roughened, match-igniting surface, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
