I UN TED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLIVER B. WILLIAMS, OF W'HITEWATER, WISCONSIN.
CUT-OUT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 724,361, dated March 31, 1903.
Application filed October 22, 1902. $erial1l'o. 128,334. (No model.)
The simple and novel construction em-- ployed by me in carrying out my invention is fully described and claimed in this specifi-' cation and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of my device with the plug or slide in. Fig. 2 is a like view of the same with the plug out. Fig. 3 is a detail of one of. the binding-posts. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing my device connected to an electric light and having a cover thereon and with the slide out.
Like numerals of reference designate like parts in the different views of the drawings.
The numeral l designates a box or support comprising a back 2, parallel guides 3, secured to said back, and a cross-piece 4, abutting said guides and extending at right angles thereto. wood or may be made entirely of non-conducting material, such as porcelain or hard rubber. Mounted on the box 1 are two pair of binding-posts 5,bearing conducting-shanks 6, which pass through apertures in the guides 3 and have heads 7, which are located in recesses 8, formed in the guides 3. In case the box is not constructed of dielectric material the binding-posts 5 would have to be insulated therefrom. The heads 7 of one pair of the binding-posts 5, which I will term the upper pair, engage and secure curved conducting spring-arms 8, the free ends of which curve inwardly and are normally in contact, as shown in Fig. 2.
A slide or plug 9, carrying conducting strips 10, mounted on the sides'thereof, fits snugly between the guides 3, with the strips 10 in contact with the inducting-heads 7 and with the springs resting against the sides of the plug and out of contact with the strips The box may be constructed of 10. Two conductors 11 are clamped in the upper pair of binding-posts 5 and connect with somesource of electrical energy, while apair of conductors 12 are clamped in the lower pair of binding-posts 5 and connect with the opposite terminals 13 of an electric light 14.
When the light 14 is in operation, the plug 9 is in place, as shown in Fig. 1. The current will then trace conductor 11, upper binding-post 5, strip 10, lower post 5, conductor 12, lamp 14, conductor 12, lower bindingpost 5, strip 10, upper binding-post 5, and conductor 11. When it is desired to work with the lamp 14, the plug 9 is withdrawn, thereby releasing the springs 8 and permitting them to come in contact, as shown in Fig. 2, when the current will trace conductor 11, upper binding-post 5, springs 8, upper binding post 5, and conductor 11-=that is, the lamp is cut out.
I do not wish to be limited as to details of construction, as these may be modified in many particulars without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a cut-out device, the combination of a support bearing two parallel guides, two pair of binding-posts mounted on said guides and bearing conducting-shanks, springs carried by one pair of said binding-posts, said springs being located to be normally in contact, and a plug bearing conducting-strips and designed to be inserted between said guides and said springs with said conductingstrips in contact with said binding-posts, substantially as described.
2."In a cut-out device, a support bearing two parallel guides, two pairof binding-posts mounted on said guides and bearing contactpieces, curved springs held by one pair of said binding-posts and constructed tobe normally in contact, a plug constructed to be inserted between said springs and engage each of said contact-pieces, substantially as described.
3." In a cut-out device, the combination of a support bearing two guides, of two bindingposts, one mounted on each of said guides, conducting-springs normally in contact and held by said binding-posts, two binding-posts one mounted on each. of said guides, and a plug bearing conducting-strips, each of said In testimony whereof I have hereunto set strips being located to co ne in contact with my hand in presence of two subscribing Witone of said first-mentioned binding-posts and nesses.
one of said last-mentioned binding-posts when OLIVER B. WILLIAMS. 5 said plug is inserted in said guides and in- Witnesses:
