Be it known that we, FREDERICK G. WET- TERSTEIN, residing at Etna, and GEORGE R. LYNCH, residing at Allegheny, in the county of AlleghenyT and State of Pennsylvania, citizens of the United States', have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and we do declare the following to be a tull, clear, and exact description Aof the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relatesto improvements in wrenches of that type in which both a rapid and slow adjustment is secured by means of a screw and a displaceable nut.
The object of the invention is to provide a device ofv this character which is simple in construction, durable in use, efficient and reliable in operation, and comparatively inexpensive of production.
A further object is to`provide a construction in which the displaceable half-nut or part nut will be securely held against or locked to the screw, therebygiving the wrench great strength and reliability.
With these and other objects in view, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be-hereinafter fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved wrench with the casing of the movable jaw partly broken away. Fig.2 is 'a detail longitudinal sectional view through theshank and movable jaw. Fig. 3 isa cross-sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 denotes the fixed jaw upon one end of the shank 2, 3 the handle upon the opposite end of the same, and 4 the movable or sliding jaw. The shank 2 isV formed with a longitudinal semicircular groove or recess 5, in which the screw 6 is Aadapted to be journaled by the trunnions 7, formed upon the vends of the screw, entering the recess 8 in the shank and :in the cap upon the handle 3. The screw 6 is provided upon its lower end with a turning nut or wheel 9, by means of which the screw may be operated or turned. f
The movable or sliding jaw 4 is formed with a casing 10, in which a cam 11 is pivoted or journaled at 12. The cam is provided with a linger-piece 13, which projects through a slot in the casing 10. The cam 1l projects into a slot 14, formed in the part nut or half-nut 15, the threads of which engage the screw 6 to lock the jaw 4 to the shank 2. The partnut and the cam are connected by the link or strap 16, one end of which is pivoted by the pin 17 in a slot 18 in the vcam 11 and the other end pivoted by the pin 19 in a registering slot 20 in the part nut 15. A coil-spring 21 is interposed between the casing 10 and the linger-piece 13 and exerts its energy to force the cam to hold the part nut in engagement with the screw 6. By this construction it will be noticed that the part nut 15 will be held rmly against the screw 6, and owing to the cam entering the slot 14 the nut is steadied and all wabbling prevented. It will be further noticed that the cam takes all the strain from the half-nut, and the energy of the spring is n`ot used to hold the nut in place. The spring simply returns the cam to its normal position and in which position it locks the nut to the screw. Owing to the link connection between the part nut and the cam, the nut will have a slight movement independent of the cam, which will allow it to readily engage the threads of the screw. It will also be seen that by seating the screw 6 in the recess or groove 5 the same will be protected from knocks and blows and prevented from being be'nt or mutilated.
In the operation of the wrench when it is desired to adjust the jaw 4 quickly the tinger-piece 13 is depressed or forced into the casing 10, which motion will remove the half nut 15 from engagement with the screw 6 through the medium of the' link 16, and the jaw 4 will then be free to slide upon the shank 2. When the tinger is removed, the spring 21 restores the cam 11 to its former position, in which it forces the half-Knut lagainst the screw 6. By operating the turning nut or Wheel 9 the ordinary slow adjustment is ob tained, as will be readily understood.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, mode of operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
That we claim as our invention, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
l. A wrench comprising a shank formed with a fixed jaw, an operating-screw carried by the shank, a movable jaw upon the shank, L part nut carried by the movable jaw and adapted to engage the operating-screw, a cam pivot-ed to said movable jaw and means connecting said part nut and cam whereby when the cam is operated, the part nut will be forced into engagement with the screw and locked thereto by the cam, substantially' as described.
2. A Wrench comprising a shank provided with a fixed head and recess or groove, an opcratingscrew journaled in said recess or groove, a sliding jaw upon the shank, a part nut adapted to engage the operating-screw, a
cam pivoted in said sliding jaw and a link connection between said part nut and cam, whereby when said cam is operated the part nut will be forced into engagement with the screw and locked thereto by the cam, substantially as described.
3. A wrench comprising a shank provided with a fixed head and a semicircular recess or groove, an operating-screw journaled in said recess or groove, a sliding jaw upon the shank, a part nut adapted to engage the operating-screw and provided with a slot, a spring-operated cam journaled in said sliding jaw, and adapted to work in the slot in said part nut and a link connecting the part nut and cam, whereby when said cam is operated the half-nut will be forced into engagement. with the operating-screw by the link and locked thereto by the cam, substantially as described.
