ELECTRIC SWITCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 723,732, dated March 24, 1903. Application filed January 15, 1902. Serial No. 89,854. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. ROGERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newmarket, in the county of Rockingham and State of New Hampshire, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Switches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to electric switches and cut-outs; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the switch, showing the casing and some other Fig. 2' is a plan view of the switch with the casing removed. r
A is a base, which is preferably formed of marble or other similar insulating material.
B represents four contact-sockets, which are secured in vertical holes drilled in the base, and b are screws for securing the conducting-wires b to the base, lateral holes 0 being drilled in the base for the passage of the said wire and screws.
The sockets B are arranged symmetrically around the central shaftD, which is journaled in the base and provided with a collar d on its upper part.
E is a handle secured to the upper end of the shaft D for revolving it.
F represents vertical guide-posts which project upwardly from the base A and are arranged one on each side of the shaft D.
G is a frame which is slidable vertically on the shaft D and on the guide-posts F. Two bars g of insulating material are secured to the ends of the frame G and project over the sockets B. Springs g are arranged between the base A and the frame G around the guideposts F.
H is a cam'which is mounted on a square part of the shaft D above the frame and which bears upon the frame. Stops hare provided on the frame and prevent the cam from being revolved backward. A spring h is arranged between the cam H and the collar d on the shaft D.
I represents contact-pieces carried by the ends of the bars 9. for engaging with the sockets B when the said frame and bars are detion, so that the'points 2 of the cam come over the frame, the contact-pieces are pressed into contact with the contact-sockets, and the circuit is established between'each pair of wires I) through the contact-pieces .I and fusible wires 11.
J is a casing which incloses the working parts of the switch. This casing is of any approved construction and protectsthe workin g parts of the switch from dust and injury.
What I claim is- 1. In a switch, the combination, with a base,
and a shaft journaled in the base; of a series of contact-sockets secured to the base around the said shaft, movable contact-pieces, fusible wires connecting said contact-pieces in pairs, a frame slidable on the said shaft and supporting the said contact-pieces over the said contact-sockets, guides for the said frame, and a cam revolving with the said shaft and operating to depress the frame, substantially as set forth.
2. In a switch, the combination, with a base, and a shaft journaled in the base and provided with a collar; of a series of contactsockets secured to the base around the said shaft, movable contact-pieces, fusible wires connecting said contact-pieces in pairs, a frame slidable on the said shaft and suppoiting the said contact-pieces over the said contact-sockets, guides forthe said frame, a cam revolving with the said shaft and operating to depress the frame, and a spring arranged between the said cam and collar, substantially as set forth. a
3. In a switch, the combination, with a base, I
and a shaft journaled in the base; of a series of contact-sockets secured to the base around the said shaft, movable contact-pieces, fusible Wires connecting said contact-pieces in 5 pairs, a frame slidable on the said shaft and supporting the said contact-pieces over the said contact-sockets, guides for the frame, a cam revolving with the said shaft and operating to depress the frame, and a stop on the frame which normally engages With the cam IO and prevents it from being revolved backward, substantially as set forth.
