PAPER-WATERIi/IARKING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 722,553, dated March 10, 1903. Application filed November 14, 1902. $eria1 No. 131,394. (No model.)
To 00% whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, JOHN BARNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Watermarking-Paper Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for watermarking paper during the course of its manufacture, and has for its object to produce a device of this character which will be simple of construction, efficient in operation, and performs the functions of the ordinary dandy-roll, for which it is designed as a substitute.
To these ends the invention comprises a pivoted arm or lever, a marking device carried thereby, and a tension-regulating device acting on said lever for varying the pressure exerted by the marking device.
The invention further consists in the details of construction more fully hereinafter set forth. V
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the improved watermarking mechanism, and Fig. 2 is atop plan view I Y square shaft suitably supported by the framework of the machine.
2 is a collar embracing said shaft and having bolted thereto a suitable bearing-bracket 3, in which arm or lever 4 is pivotally mounted by means of shaft or pin 5. The arm 4 is formed at its pivoted end with a circular disklike head 6, havinglat one side a laterallyprojecting flange 7, provided with a series of notches 8, any one of which may receive and hold the free end of a torsion-spring 9, mounted on the pivotal shaft 5 and having its other end engaging with the bracket 3, as at 10. It will be readily understood that by shifting the free end of the spring to the various notches its tension will be regulated and the amount of pressure exerted by the arm 4 variously modified for the purpose to be presently pointed out. The disk-like head 6 and the spring 9, constructed and arranged as set forth, provide a tension-regulating means for v in presence of two witnesses.
the marking device, which will now be referred to. The spring acts to restrict the movement of the head and vary the pressure of the marking device carried at the opposite end of the arm or lever 4:.
11 is the marking device, preferably in the form of a roller, carried by the free end of the cured thereto by through-bolts 13. The roller 11 is loosely mounted for rotation on a shaft 14, seated at its ends in slots 15, formed in the forked ends of the lever 4 and secured by winged nuts 16. By loosening these nuts the roller may be readily removed for the substitution of another bearing different marks or for any other desired purpose.
17 is a metal roller underlying the marking device and between which and the marker the paper being operated upon passes.
By regulating the tension device as above pointed out to vary the pressure exerted by the lever 4 it is obvious that the pressure of the marking device upon the paper being treated will be similarly varied.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- I 1. In a machine for watermarking paper, the combination of a lever pivotally mounted at one end and having a disk at said pivoted end, a marking device carried by the opposite end of the lever, and a spring adjustable in relation to the head to vary the tension of the marking device at the opposite end of the lever.
2. In a machine for watermarking paper, the combination with a pivoted arm or lever, of a marking device carried thereby, a spring acting on said lever to apply pressure to the marking device and means for varying the tension of the said spring.
3. In a machine for watermarking paper, the combination with a marking device, an arm or lever carrying the same, a series of notches formed on the lever, and a spring adapted to engage with any one of said notches to apply pressure to the marking device, whereby the pressure may be varied by changing the spring from engagement with one notch to another, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature JOHN BARNETT.
