To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE N. HOLLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Bronx, city of New York, county of WVestchester, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Brushes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to hair-brushes, and has for its object to provide an improved brush for applying heat to the hair while brushing it for the purpose of improving the hair and to dry the hair after Washing or shampooing it, especially that of ladies.

Another object of myinvention is to provide an improved device of the class described which will possess advantages in point of convenience, simplicity, facility of manufacture, inexpensiveness, effectiveness, and general efiiciency.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a brush embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the parts of the brush disassembled, the handle being partly in section. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional View of one of the teeth in position for connection with the back of the brush.

Corresponding parts in all the figures are designated by the same reference characters.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the back of the brush, of any desired form, herein shown as oval in outline and having an oval rounded top. The back 1 of the brush comprises a top portion 2 and a bottom portion 3, provided with means of connecting them together. The top portion 2 is of an oval cup shape and provided at one end with an interiorly-screw-threaded semicircular extension or neck 4. The side edges 5 of the top portion 2 form a flange 6, provided with an inner shoulder 7. The bottom portion 3 has a substantially flat bottom 8 and oval sides 9, provided at their upper edges with a flange 10, having an outer shoulder 11, and is provided at one end with an interiorly-screwthreaded semicircular extension or neck 12, complementary to the neck 4. When the parts are assembled, the flange 10 fits within the flange 6 and against the shoulder 7, the

flange 6 abutting against the shoulder 11, and

the flange 6 is crimped down upon the flange 10, forming a water-tight joint, the extensions or necks 4 and 12 then forming a tubular neck. The bottom 8 of the bottom portion 3 has a series of perforations 13, in which hollow teeth 14, closed at their lower ends, are secured.

A convenient means of securing the teeth 14 in the bottom 8 of the back 1 of the brush and that herein shown consists in reducing the upper open ends of the teeth 14 to form shoulders 15 and inserting such reduced ends through the perforations 13 until the shoulders 15 bear against the bottom 8 and crimping such open ends down upon the inside of the bottom 8, forming a water-tight joint.

The top portion 2, the bottom portion 3, and the teeth 14 are preferably formed of metal and may be conveniently stamped therefrom.

A handle portion 16,preferably of some nonconducting material, has a central longitudinal bore 17 and is provided at one end with a reduced exteriorly-screw-threaded portion 18, adapted to be screwed into the necks 4 and 12 when the top portion 2 and the bottom portion 3 have been joined together. The handle portion 16 is also provided with asleeve l9, surrounding the reduced screw-threaded portion 18 and adapted to inclose the necks 4 and 12 and abut against the top portion 2 and bottom portion 3 of the back 1 when joined together and form an additional means of binding them together and a finish to the junction of the back 1 and handle portion 16. The outer end of the handle portion 16 is cupshaped, as at 20, and the bore 17 is interiorly screw threaded at that end and provided with a cap 21, complementarily screw-threaded. By the cup-shape formation of the end of the handle portion 16 any overflow is prevented in filling the back 1 and teeth 14 with a suitable heating fluid. If desired, a core 22, preferably of metal, may be inserted in the bore 17 to protect the material of the handle portion 16 from injury by contact with the heating fluid.

The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood and appreciated. The teeth 14 having been inserted in the perforations 13 and the open ends of the teeth 14 crimped down on the bottom 8 and the top portions 2 and bottom portion 3 con nected and the handle portion 16 screwed in the neckset and 12, the heating fluid is poured into the bore 17 at the outer end of the handle portion 16. When the brush is full, the cap 21 is screwed on and the brushis ready for use. The heated teeth 14: cause the hair to dry rapidly and in brushing the hair tend to improve the hair. The parts of the brush are simple and easily and inexpensively manufactured, the top and bottom portions being stamped out of metal, as well as the teeth, while the handle portion may also be stamped or molded. The method of fastening the teeth in the bottom of the back of the brush by crimping the open ends of the teeth down and of connecting the top and bottom portions of the back of the brush by crimping the side edges together is practical, simple, effective, andinexpensive. When the handle is secured on, the whole presents a smooth rounded surface without anything, to catch in the hair and with no sharp edges or corners. The cup shape of the outer end of the handle prevents any overflow in filling the brush.

I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the details of construction and arrangement as herein described and illustrated, as it is manifest that variations and modifications may be made in the features of construction and arrangement in the adaptation of the device to various conditions of use without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and improvements. I therefore reserve the right to all such variations and modifications as properly fall within the scope of my invention and the terms of the following claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A hair-brush, comprising a hollow back formed of two sections provided with com plementary edge flanges and adjoining shoulders for connecting said sections and with complementary interiorly-screw-threaded semicircular extensions at one end, a hollow handle provided with means of connection with said extensions and with means of closing the outer end, and hollow teeth closed at one end and communicating at the other end with said back.

2. A hair-brush, comprising an oval hollow back provided at one end with an interiorlyscrew-threaded neck, a hollow handle having one end reduced and screw-threaded complementary to said neck, and hollow teeth closed at one end and communicating at the other end with said back.

3. A hair-brush, comprising an oval hollow back in two sections adapted to be crimped together and provided with complementary interiorly-screw-thread ed semicircular necks, a hollow handle having its ends reduced and screw-threaded complementary to said neck and provided with a sleeve adapted to slip on said neck and abut against said back, and hollow teeth closed at one end and communicating at the other end with said back.

4. In ahair-brush comprising a sectional hollow back with perforated bottom, hollow teeth closed at their lower ends and having their upper ends reduced to fit said perforations and forming shoulders adapted to abut against said bottom, the open upper ends being crimped down on the inside of said bottom.
