ALBIN LENHARDTSON, OF STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN.
TOOTHPBCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 719,017, dated January 27, 1903.
Application filed November l, 1901. Serial No. 80,733. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ALBIN LENHARDTSON, a subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, and a resident of Stockholm, Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toothpicks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of the application to a toothpick of a reservoir containing antiseptic fluid, and means for discharging small quantities of the liuid between and at the roots of the teeth in the act of using the device for picking the teeth, thus providing i-n one instrument the means of accomplishing these allied purposes equally as well as they may be accomplished with special instruments for each purpose, whereby not only the expense and care of two separate instruments will be avoided, but the more elicient and less troublesome means employed will encourage more general and careful attention to the teeth, the said means being as hereinafter described, and represented in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a sectional elevation ot' the instrument adapted for carrying in the pocket. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same as adapted for use.
The part a, comprising the pointed device for picking the teeth, maybe made in anyof the usual forms of such instruments, but is here shown in practically the same shape as a writing-pen, but without the split in the nilo necessary to the successful operation of a pen. Like a pen, also, the upper end of part a is tubular or partly tubular for convenient attachment to a holder l), on the upper end of which holder is a hollow handle constituting the reservoir in which the antiseptic liquid CZ is contained. Through the holder l) is a small duct e, adapted for the discharge ot the liquid d from the reservoir to the pick, and in the upper end of handle c is a plunger f, iitted in an elastic sack of rubberg, the mouth end of which is attached to the end ofthe handle, said plunger extending a little above the handle, so that it can be pressed downwardly by the finger to expel a small quantity of the liquid through duct e, the sack being stretched at the same time to limit the movement of the plunger and to serve byits resilience to retract the plunger.
The mouth end of the sack is folded over the end of the handle and cemented or otherwise secured thereto, as at h, for holding it against the thrust of the piston and for packing to prevent escape of the liquid.
The holder l) may be an integral part of the handle or be a separate part and be detaehably connected, as shown in the drawings, or in any other approved way. It is, however, preferable to connect the holder detachably as a means of opening the reservoir for supplying the liquid.
A cap i is detachably fitted on the end of the handle to which the pick is connected for inclosing and protecting the pick for safely carrying it in the pocket.
What I claim as my invention is,-
The combination with a toothpick, of the holder having a discharging-duct, the handle containing a liquid-reservoir, a reciprocating plunger for expelling limited quantities of the liquid through the ductonto the toothpick, and the flexible sack constituting a packing for the piston and a retracting device for said piston, said handle having the cap for protecting the toothpick.
Signed at Stockholm this 15th day of October, 1901.
