ATTORNEY UNITED 'STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE LEE LEAOHMAN, OF NEW OUMBERLAND, WEST VIRGINIA.
sLlcER. i
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 717,223, dated December 30, 1902, Application filed August 8, 1902.` Serial No. 118,917. (No model.)
To @ZL whom it may concern:
Beit known that LGEoReE LEE LEAOHMAN, a citizen of theUnited States, and a resident of New Cumberland, in the county of Hancock and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Slicers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in slicers particularly adapted for slicing bread; and the object is to provide a device of this character of simple construction and by means of which aplnrality of slices may be cut at one operation.
I will describe a slicer embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciication,
in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the gures.
Figure l is a plan view of a slicer embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section lon the line Lr x of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line y y of Fig. l.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the base of a slicer made of any suitable material, and on the lower side of the base is a clip 2 for engaging with the under surface of a table-top or the like, to which the device is to be clamped by a clamping-screw 3, operating in said clip. At one side of the base is a stop-plate 4, against which an end of the bread-loaf is to be placed while being sliced. A frame, consisting of a side member 5 and end members 6 and 7, is mounted toswing vertically over the base, and this frame carries a series of cutters 8. The cutting-blades 8 are extended at one end through openings in the end piece 10, and a rod 9 is passed through openings inthe projected ends and engages against the side of said end piece 7. The opposite ends of the blades are connected to stems 10,.which pass through openings in the end piece 6, and the projected portions of these stems 10 are screw-threaded for engaging with set-screws 11. On the rear end of the frame are slotted arms 12, through the slots of which posts 13, extended from the base 1, project. Between these arms 12 and nuts 14 on the posts are springs 15. Near the forward end of the base 1 are upwardly-extending guide-ngers 16, between which the cutting-blades pass, and on the base in alinement with the guide-iingers are strips 17, which are spaced apart, as clearly indicated in the drawings. To hold the bread from movement while slicing, I may employ pins 1S, which extend upward from certain of the strips 17 and enter the loaf.
In operation after raising the frame with the blades a loaf is to be placed in the machine, and then by means of the handle 19 the frame is to be moved downward to cause the blades to pass through the loaf. During this movement the slots in the arms V12 will permit of a slight longitudinal movement of the blades through the bread, and the sprin gs l5 will have 'a tendency to force the rear ends ofthe blades downward. The spaces between the strips 17Vpern1it the blades to pass effectu'ally through the bread-loaf.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- `1. A slicer comprising a base, a blade-carrying frame, and spring-yielding connection between one end of said frame and the base, the said frame also having longitudinal sliding relation to the base, substantially as speci- GEORGE LEE LEACHMAN.
