UNITED y STATES `PATENT OFFICE.
FRED S. BORTO, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
PARI-:#RECEIPT SLIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 715,960, dated December 16, 1902.
Application led November 2, 1901. Serial No. 80,893. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED S. BORTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful 1mprovement in Fare-Receipt Slips, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
My invention relates to slips used by conductors upon railway or street cars for receipting fares, its object being to provide a ready and inexpensive means for such purpose.
Said invention consists of means hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail certain means embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting but one of various inechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In the annexed drawing the figure represents a fare-receipt slip embodying vmy invention.
Along the upper edge of the said slip is arranged in the order of their succession a series of names of stations forming a row from left to right. Along the right-hand edge is arranged from top to bottom a column of numbers representing successively-increasing fares, beginning at the top. Beneath each name excepting the last in the row of station-names is arranged in a column the names of all stations succeeding such station-names, forming columns from top to bottom and parallel with the column of numbers. The numbers are arranged at intervals from top to bottom equal to those between the names from .top to bottom of the columns of station-names, so that opposite to the right of each name but one number will appear, the first number appearing opposite the second name in each such column of names, as shown. Lines a are drawn to more clearly dene the rows and columns formed as'described.
When it is desired to determine the amount 0f fare between two stations, -the name of the first is taken from the upper row of names to right below such number and the Arectangular portion so torn handed the passenger as a receipt.
Any, means may be employed for tearing the slip; but I prefer to use the cutter shown and described in Letters Patent No. 603,826, issued May lO, 1898.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the means herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any one of the following claims or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my inventionl. In a fare-receipt slip, a series of names of successive stations arranged in a row in one direction in the order of their succession, a seriesof numbers representingsuccessivelyincreasing fares arranged in a column in a second direction, and columns of names of successive stations arranged in a plurality of columns in the direction of said number-column, each such column beginning with a station-name which is located in and forms a part of said first-named row of stations.
2. In a fare-receipt slip, a series of names of successive stations arranged in a row along one edge of such slip, a series of numbers representing successively-increasing fares arranged in a column along a second edge at right angles to the rst, and columns of names of successive stations parallel with such number-column, each such column beginning with a station-name which is located in and forms a part of said first-named row of stations.
Signed by me this 29th day of October,`1901.
FRED S. BORTON.
