Description

u. UNIrn STATES FRANK STREICH, CF
A'InNT OFFICE.
oHIoAeo,Y ILLINoIs.
WOODWORKING IMPLEM ENT.
. 0 SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 715,173, dated December 2, 1902.
Application tiled April 14,1902.
To @ZZ when@ it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK STREICH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in lVoodWorking Implements, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates particularly to spokeshaves; and my primary object is to provide a simple device of the character Yindicated which can bereadily adjusted, is capable of use in difficult situations, and can be usedv as either a right-handed or left-handed implement.
The preferred embodiment of my invention comprises a stock having a central body portion serving as a handle and lateral tapering extensions and attached cutting portions or bit-irons lying adjacent to said extensions.
My invention is shown in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, in whichn Figure l is a bottom plan view; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the rear or blunt edge of the device; Fig. 3, a vertical section taken as indicated at line 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. t a vertical section taken as indicated at line 4 ofl Fig. 2. j
A represents the body portion, stock, or handle, provided with flat under and upper surfaces a, a curved rear side surface ct, and a straight front side surface a2. Extending in opposite directions from the handle and integral therewith are extensions B, having slightly-concave upper surfaces l, surfaces b lying in a plane projecting obliquely upward from the dat under surface a, surfaces h2 lying in a plane projecting slightly obliquely backward from the side flat surface a2, and surfaces h3 convergent to the surface b2. The edges of the described portions are rounded that the instrument may be freely handled Without inconvenience.
The portion A is provided with longitudinal slots or recesses as.
C represents bit-irons or knives having shank portions c, provided with longitudinal slots c and the pointed cutting portions c2 in a plane oblique to the plane of the shank and conforming approximately in outline to the outlineof the cut-away portions of the extensions, the lower surfaces of the blades be- Yon the implement.
`made.
Serial No. 102,827. (No model.)
ing approximately flush with the lower surfaces of the stock and its extensions. The cutting portions of the blades have thick rear edges c3, which taper to keen cutting edges c4, lyingin planes oblique to the under surface a and parallel with and adjacent to oblique edges c, formed by the front Walls c5 of the recesses h4, meeting the oblique surfaces b'. The bit-irons or knives are adjustably secured by screws d, which pass through the slots c and into the body portion A.
In use the implement is grasped at the stock or handle portion by either hand as desired. When used in one hand, the cutting edge of one knife is in proper position for use and When grasped by the other hand the cutting edge of the knife is in proper position for use.
The implement is used as a shave in a wellunderstood manner, the oblique extension or knife-guard and the coacting oblique pointedl cutting portion of the knife enabling the implement to be used in diiicult situations.l
Moreover, the unused oblique extension or knife-guard conforms to the shape of the hand, enabling a Iirm grip to be maintained longitudinally at its shank the cutting edge is moved parallel with the coacting edge of the guard, enabling a thicker or thinner shaving to be cut at will.
Changes in minor details of construction Within the spirit of my invention may be Hence no undue limitation is to be understood from the foregoing detailed description.
What I claim as new, and desire to secu re by Letters Patent, is s 1.In an implement of the character described, the combination of a stock provided with an extension'or knife-guard having a lower surface inclined upwardly and toward the extremityof the guard, and a suitablyattached knife with a cutting edge having a similar inclination and coacting With4A said guard.
2. In an implement of the character ,described, the combination of a stock provided with a tapered extension or knife-guard having an oblique edge, and a knife suitably attached having a cutting edge adjacent to said edge of said knife-guard.
By adjusting the knife` 3. In an implement of the character described, the combination of a stock provided with a tapered extension or knife-guard having an oblique edge, and an adjustably-attached knife 'having a cutting edge adjacent to said edge of said knife-guard.
4. In an implement of the character described, the combination of a stock provided with a tapered extension or knife-guard having an oblique edge, and a knife adjustably attached by slot-and-pin connection at its shank With tlfe stock, said knife having a cutting edge oblique to said shank and adjacent to said edge ot' said knife-guard.
5. In an implement. of the character d'escribed, the combination of a stock provided with a tapered extension or knife-guard having an oblique surface, and asuitably-attached knife having a cutting edge adjacent to said surface of said knife-guard.
6. In an implement of the character described, the combination of a stock having oppositely-extending knife-guards, and knives suitably attached having cutting edges adjacent to said guards.
7. In an implement of the character described, the combination of a stock having oppositely-extendingknife-guards,and suitablyattached knives having cutting edges, disposed in the same direction, and adjacent to said knife-guards.
8. In an implement of the character described, the combination of a stock having op,- positely-exten'ding tapering extensions provided With knife-guards having oblique edges, and knives, tapering to points, suitably attached and having cutting edges adjacent to said edges of said knife-guards.
FRANK STREICH.
