GEORGE WOLF, OF JERSEY CITY, NEIV JERSEY.
METAL LlNED PAPER BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 714,988, dated December 2, 1902.
Application filed May 10, 1901. Serial No. 59,617. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WOLF, a citi zen of the United States, residing in Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal-Lined Paper Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved metal-lined paper box which has special advantages as a box for jewelry or other articles in cases where a light yet strong and durable box is required; and the invention consists of a paper-box body comprising side walls composed of a sheet-metal reinforcing layer and interior and exterior layers of paste board upon said reinforcing layer, a bottom, means connecting said bottom with the interior layer or lining, and an exterior layer of ornamental leather, paper, or suitable fabric; and the invention consists, further, of certain details of construction which will be more fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of myimproved metal-lined paper box. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line 3 3, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the body, and B the lid, of a box embodying my invention. The body is composed of a reinforcing layer a, of sheet metal, which is covered at both sides by a layer of pasteboard, the reinforcing layer and outer layer 1) being held in position by the exterior pasteboard or leather covering 0 of the box, while the inner layer d extends downwardly and is connected by a binding-strip c with the bottom 6 of the box. The ornamental covering layer 0 preferably extends over the top of the side walls and partially down the inside of the same, as shown, thereby covering and binding the exposed upper edges of the other layers. At its lower portion the layer 0 is preferably turned over upon the bottom 6 and its edges secured by the paper facing e of the bottom. The lid is constructed in the same manner, witha sheet-metal reinforcing layer a retained between the pasteboard layers 1) cl, the binding-strip being, however, omitted and the inner layer cl being turned over and connected directly to the top 6%. The covering layer 0 extends preferably over the entire top. The sheet-metal reinforcing layers of the body and lid have the advantage not only of greatly strengthening the box, but also of permitting the convenient and secure riveting of the lockff at the front of the body and lid and the hinge g at the rear of the same. The riveting of the lock and binge to the side walls, in connection with the coveringlayer c, secures the inner and outer layers and the reinforcing layer rigidly upon one another.
My improved metal-reinforced box provides a superior receptacle for a variety of articles, such as jewelry, gloves, silverware, perfumery, &c. The box has thinner walls and is lighter and stronger than the ordinary woodenshells or boxes heretofore in use and furnishes an inclosure having all the appearance of a pasteboard box finished in any ornamental manner, while possessing strength and durability and being capable of being securely locked.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a metal-lined paper box, the combination of an interior sheet-metal reinforcing layer for the side walls, an interior layer of pasteboard, an exterior layer of pasteboard, a bottom within the interior layer of pasteboard, an angular binding-strip cemented to said interior layer between the same and the metal reinforcing layer, the lower portion of said angular binding-strip extending along the under side of said bottom, and an outer covering layer upon said exterior layer of pasteboard, said covering layer extending at its lower portion upon said lower portion of the angular bindingstrip for protecting the same at the bottom of the box, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed'my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE WOLF.
