Description
No. 714,979. Patent d Dec. 2, I902.
- M. WEBER.
LOCKING DEVICE FOR GAR SEATS.
(Application filed Jan. 24, 1902.)
(No Model.)
UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MORITZ WEBER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO ST. LOUIS CAR COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION.
LOCKING DEVICE FOR CAR-SEATS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 714,979, dated December 2, 1902.
Application filed January 24,1902. Serial No. 91,027. (No model.)
To etZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORITZ WEBER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looking Devices for Car-Seats, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a device whereby the backs of that class of seats known as Walk-over car-seats may be held from movement while in use.
My invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a perspective view of my retaining-catch. Fig. II is an end view of a car-seat partly broken out and showing my retaining-catches applied thereto.
1 designates the end frames of a car-seat, on which the seat 2 is movably supported, so as to be capable of a rocking motion.
3 is the seat-back, swingingly connected to the end frames by links 4 at each end of the seat and also swingingly united to the seat 2 by swinging bars 5 at each end of the seat, by which movement is imparted to the seat 2 in any common manner.
No invention, per se, is claimed for the parts thusfar described and their construction may be varied in so far as my improvement is concerned.
Fixed to the links land extending from one link to the other is a cross-bar 6.
7 designates retaining catches provided with fork-arms 8, by which said catches are pivotally mounted on the end frames 1 of the car-seat. These catches 7 extend inwardly above the end frames and are provided at their inner ends with hooks 9,that are adapted to engage the cross-bar 6 when the seat-back- 3 is moved to either side of the car-seat for the purpose of holding the links 4 and the seat-backs to which said links are attached, as seen in Fig. II. The catches 7 are provided with heels 9, adapted to serve as fingerpieces to be grasped by a persons hand for the purpose of elevating the hooks of the catches from engagement with the cross-bar 6 when it is desired to shift the seat-back to the opposite side from that at which it was previously located. When the seat-back is moved to either of the catches, the hook of the catch rides over the cross-bar and falls automatically into engagement therewith after passing it, as will be readily understood, so that the parts of the seat will be held firmly as long as the catch remains in engagement with the cross-bar.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination with a car-seat comprising end frames, a shiftable seat, a movable back, and links by which said back is connected to said end frames; of a cross-bar attached to said links, and a retaining-catch mounted on one of said end frames and adapted to engage said cross-bar to hold said seatback from movement, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a car-seat comprising end frames, a shiftable seat, a movable back, and links by which said back is connected to said end frames; of a cross-bar fixed to said links, and catches pivotally mounted on one of said end frames, said catches being provided with hooks adapted to engage said cross-bar, and heels by which said catches may be moved to free said hooks from engagement with said cross-bar, substantially as described.
MORITZ WEBER.
In presence of- H. S. VoGEL, M. H. MURPHY.
