To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM M. FENN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bristol, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators and Weeders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to hand-cultivators and weed-cutters, and has for its object the provision of an improved device of this character embodying a light portable frame having a blade which will be fully operative whether the cultivator be pushed forward or drawn backward and which Will present the cutting edge of said blade always at the angle best suited to the work to be performed, as will be hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the cultivator; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of a portion of the same, illustrating the manner in which the blade is mounted for swinging movement.

Like numerals designate similar parts in the several views.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates a frame shown as comprising side bars 6 6, having angular extensions 7 7, to which are secured the handles 8 for propelling the cultivator. These side bars 6 6 are bent inward at their forward ends and receive between them a Wheel 9, the hub of which is journaled upon a pin or bolt 9, suitable rigidity of the frame being obtained by cross-bars 1O 10, as illustrated in Fig. 1.

Designated in a general Way by the numeral 12 is the blade of the cultivator, and it comprises in the construction illustrated a horizontal cutter 19, having cutting edges 19 19 on its respective sides. This blade is preferably provided with integral extensions 18 18, which are bent inward at their upper ends.

Designated by the numerals 13 13 are hangers, each of which is provided with a box 16 16, respectively, which boxes are slipped over the side bars and are adj ustably secured thereto by screws 15 15, respectively, or in any other desired manner. Projecting from the inner surface of each of these hangers are separated lugs 14 14, and pivoted to the hangers at 17 17 are the vertical extensions of the cutting-blade above described.

By reference to Fig. 2 it will be seen that when the cultivator is pushed forward the blade 12 will swing upon its pivots from the position shown in full lines to that represented by the dotted lines F and that when it is drawn backward said blade will swing from its normal vertical position to the position designated by the dotted lines B, the lugs 14 14, limiting the motion of the blade in either direction. By thus controlling the movement of the blade it is caused to stand at the best angle for the use for which it is intended and will readily enter the soil to cultivate the same or to sever the roots of weeds or plants below the surface thereof.

My invention is useful as a general gardentool for cutting strawberry-r11nners, eradicating weeds, and loosening the soil, and may also be employed for cutting sod, if desired.

While I have shown a cutter formed with integral extensions, the invention is not limited thereto, for said cutter may be a separate piece secured to said extensions, if desired. Other changes may be made in the construction of the implement, the invention not being limited to the precise devices shown.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A cultivator comprising a portable frame; adjustable hangers secured to the frame, each hanger having a pair of stops; and a double-edged blade pivoted to said hangers, and adapted to operate in either direction.

2. Acultivator comprising a portable frame having side bars and adjustable thereon; hangers depending from said side bars; a blade pivoted to the hangers; and lugs on the hangers for limiting the movement of the blade.

3. A cultivator comprising a frame having side bars; hangers adjustably secured to the side bars, each hanger having a pair of lugs; and a double-edged blade having inwardlydeflected extensions pivoted to the hangers and limited in its movement by said lugs.

4. A cultivator comprising a frame having side bars; hangers having boxes at their up per ends fitted upon the side bars; devices for adj ustably securing the boxes in position; stops carried by the hangers; and a blade having extensions pivoted to the hangers.

5.
