UNITED STATES PATENT CRUCE.
CHARLES H. HOWLAND-SHERMAN, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE HOWLAND-SHERMAN MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF WILMINGTON, DELAWARE, AND BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, A CORPORA- TION OF DELAWARE.
COLUMN CAPITAL AND ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 712,299, dated October 28, 1902. Application iiled December 24, 1901. .Serial No. 87,118. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.'
Beit known that I, CHARLES H. HOWLAND- SHERMAN, a citizen of the United States, re-
siding at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented new and useful Improvenients in Column Capitals and Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in Io columns for supportin g lioor-girders and other beams used in building construction of various kinds.
The object ot' the invention is to so construct lhe capitals of built-up iron or steel I 5 columns that their several detail parts, consisting of the top angle-plates, butt angleplates, and gusset or side angle-plates, form what may be called a cell, into or through which is placed a floor-girder, secured directly zo or indirectly to the capital by means of rivets,
bolts, or other secure fastenings, and a transverse beam above the oor-girder, secured to the upward extension of said gussets.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is an z5 elevation of a part of a column with capital attached, showing in section a girder supported thereby and a cross-beam resting on said girder and riveted to the capital. Fig. 2 is a similar View with the girder and crossbeam omitted. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2'. Figs.`5, 6,1 and 7 show in detail the several different parts which make up the capital.
' 3 5 Similar reference characters indicate similar parts in the several figures.
The column 82, as represented in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, is built up of the channel-beams 108 109 and an I-beam 110, placed centrally be- 4o tweengthem. The webs of the channel-beams are riveted to the anges of the I-beam to form the structure shown in Fig. 3. To the column 82 is secured the capital, of which essential parts are the butt-angles 83 35, attached by rivets 84 to the web of the column channel-beams and supportingthe door-girders 86 directly upon their upper flanges, which anges are riveted to the iioor-girder 86. The gussets or side angles 87 88 are secured 5o by rivets 89 to the flanges of the column channel-beams 108 109 in such manner as to inclose between them the tloor-girder 86. The
gussetsstand in a vertical position, one flange 0f each gusset extending above the upper plate of the oor-girder and` being provided 5 5 with holes for'riveting'the transverse beam` to the gussets. The top angles 90 91, as indicated in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, are secured by through-rivets 92 to the top Web-plate 93 of the ioor-girder. The Hoor-girder, as shown, is a rectangular b'oX-girder, its side channels 96 97 being secured to the top and bottom plates 93 95 by rivets 9S in the usual manner. Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. Duplex lateral gussets having iianges adapted to secure the floor-girders, and having base attachment to the sides of the capitals of columns to form an integral continuation of said capitals, substantially as set forth. 7o
2. Duplex lateral gussets having anges adapted to secure the Hoor-girders, and having base attachment tothe sides of a capital of a column, said duplex lateral gussets adapted to form an embracing or semicellular capital for the column, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, in a column-capital, of front and rear top or butt angles, lateral superiorly-flanged angular gussets, top an- 8o gles, and suitable means for connecting said butt-an gles and gussets to the column in such manner as to'form an embracing or semicellular capital adapted to inferiorly support and laterally embrace a Iloor-girder, substan- 8 5 tially as set forth. V l
4. Combined in a column-capital front and rear longitudinal butt-angles at the top, paired duplex lateral .angular gussets secured at the Sides to the top, and having vertical flanges 9o` at their tops, and top angles, the construction being such that it forms a semicellular or embracing capital, adapted to embrace laterally a longitudinal i'loor-girder resting on top of the column and to engage, bymeans 95 of the superior flanges of said gussets, a trans- 5 verse ginder runninggcrosswise of said longitudinal girder, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof lI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES H. HOWLAND-SHERMAN. Witnesses:
