UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BERNARD ADOLPIIUS MCFADDEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
EXERCISING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 712,000, dated October 28, 1902.
Application filed September 28, 1900. Serial No. 31,356. (No model.)
1'0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BERNARD ADOLPHUS MCFADDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in EX- ercising Devices, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to exercising devices, and particularly to what are known as,
' showing a pun ching-bag supported according to my invention; Fig. -2, a plan view of a part of the suspending devices, and Fig. 3 a side view of the bag with one of the suspending devices connected therewith.
In the practice of my invention I prefer to suspend the punching-bag in a door or doorframe, this being the most convenient method in compartments of various kinds and classes where such devices are frequently desired for exercising purposes, and in the drawings forming part of this specification, reference being made to Fig. 1, I have shown at 5 an ordinary door-frame and at 6 an ordinary punching-bag, and in the practice of my invention I provide the bag at one end thereof with a loop or other attaching device 7, with which is connected a strong elastic cords, which is suspended from the top of the frame 5. I also provide a ring or band 9, composed of any desired material and of slightly-less diameter than the bag 6. The upper end of this bag is passed through this ring'or band, and said ring or band is provided on the opposite sides thereof with eyes or rings 10, with which are connected elastic cords 11, and connected with the cords 11 by means of rings or other attaching devices 12 are supplemental elastic cords 13, which are connected to the sides of the frame 5, preferably below the bag 6, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
If the frame 5 is unusually wide, the cords 13 may have other cords let connected therewith, one of which is shown in Fig. 2, and by means of the ring or band 9 and. the suspending-cord 8 the bag 6 is securely held in the desired position, while being also capable of swinging or yielding in any direction under pressure of a blow delivered thereto on any part thereof below the ring or band 9.
It will be understood that the ring or band 9 is of such diameter that the bag 6 cannot be driven upwardly therethough, and while the bag is free to swing laterally or move vertically it will always return to its normal position or that position shown in Fig. 1.
It will be understood that the bag 6 is in practice filled with air under pressure, or the same may be filled with sand or with meal or with any desired material, and the necessary weight and form are thus given thereto, and the filling of the bag, as described, prevents it from being forced through the ring or band 9. I
It is not necessary that the cords 11 and 13 should both be elastic, and in Fig. 3 I have shown one cord 11 in place of two, and the suspending-cord 8 may also be composed of sections or parts, if desired, one of which need not necessarily be elastic.
My improvement is simple in construction and operation and well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and it will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificingits advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The herein-described means for suspending a punching-bag consisting of an elastic cord connected with one end of the bag and adapted to be suspended vertically from an overhead support, and lateral elastic cords connected with the bag below the connection therewith of the first-named cord andadapt-ed to be connected with suitable side supports beneath the point of the connection of the ing a punching-bag consisting of a verticallyarranged supporting device secured to the top of the bag and adapted to be connected with an overhead support, and a plurality of lateral elastic supporting devices connected with the bag below the top thereof, and adapted to be connected with suitable later ally-arranged supports at either side of the bag, the connection of the lateral elastic supporting devices with the bag being made by means of a ring through which the top of the bag passes, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a punching-bag of a vertically-arranged elastic cord secured to the top of said-bag and to a suitable overhead support, V-shaped connecting-cords, the separate branches of which are connected at the ends with the bag on opposite sides thereof adjacent to the top thereof, and elastic cords forming a connection between said V-shaped connecting-cords and suitable side supports, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination with a punching-bag of a vertically-arranged elastic cord secured to the top of said bag and to a supporting-frame, V- shaped connecting-cords secured at the ends to the bag on opposite sides thereof and adjacent to the top and lateral elastic cords forming a connection between the V-shaped connecting-cords and the sides of the frame, such elastic cords extending outward and downward, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this th day of September, 1900.
BERNARD ADOLPHUS MCFADDEN.
