TO ALL WI-IOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, B. K. DORWART and GEORGE ROTE, Jr., of Lancaster city, in the county of Lancaster, and in the State oi' Pennsylvania, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Fences; and dol hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, audto the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, B Av C D-represent panels of pur fence, which may be constructed in any of the known and usual ways in which panels for portable fences are made.
In securing adjacent panels,- when the fence is to be straight, the ends of said panels are lapped, and mortises or slots being made through their top boards, slotted keys are inserted in said mortises, and then wedges a a are driven in the slots of the keys, as represented. These keys E have an open slot at one end, and a closed slot at the other. The wedges pass into the closed slots, and, pivoted in the open slot, is the upper-'end of a brace, G. The lower end of thebraoe G sets ont from the panel, and serves to hold the fence in position. The braces alternate with and on each side of the panels. Where there is to be a corner, two keys, -as seen at F, are secured together at right angles,`and their outer ends being provided with closed slots or mortises, are inserted in suitable mortises, madefor them in the boards of the panels, to be joined, and are there secured by suitable wedges, as represented in iig. 2. The keys to secure the bottom boards of the panels are provided with only one slot, which is u close one, as seen. II represents a-swivel-block, having two jaws, between which the end rail oi' a. panel is pivoted, and having one end turned in cylindrical form, aud Apassed. through a post, and th'en keyed on the other side. This swivel-block is intended to be secured to a post, which is planted firmly in the earth. The panel has its end rail pivoted at its centre, between the jaws ofthe block, so that, when the Water, in case oi' n. freshet, washes the under side of the fence up, it causes the block H to turn, so that the fence assumes a at or horizontal position. Near points where the fence is expected to wash, its panels are connected lbyfrail pins, so that they will break, and allow the fence to swing out of the way upon the swivel-block H. A
Having thus fully described our invention, what we'claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The keys E E, constnucted as described, and used with the braces G, pins or wedges a a, and panels A B C D, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The swivel-block H, as constructed and used, with the permanent post and end panel, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing, we have hereunto set our hands this 9th day of September, 1867.
