GEORGE W. BUSKIRK, OF NE\V YORK, N. Y.
FILE-BOOK.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 710,947, dated October 14, 1902.
Application filed April 18, 1901. Serial No. 56,353. (No model.)
To (til whom if; may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BUSKIRK, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in File-Books, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a simple, convenient, and handy form of scrap or filing book, and embodies an article of this character so made and organized as to permit the ready insertion and withdrawal of envelops, reference-leaves, index-sheets, .&c.,' advantageously comprised in books of this character.
The various details of construction are more fully set forth in the following specification, with the aid of the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating a file-book embodying myinvention, the book being shown somewhat opened out. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the back edge of the book. Fig. 3 is a similar view, .upon a somewhat-enlarged scale, of the lower edge thereof. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a cover-section of the book. Fig. 5 is a similar view of an adjustable connecting portion for the two sections of the cover. Fig. 6 is asectional view drawn to the same scale as Fig. 3, the plane of the section being upon the dotted lines 6 6 in Fig. 1, part of the section, however, being broken away. Fig. '7 is a plan of an envelop or receptacle for holding clippings, &c., and constituting one of the leaves in my file-book. Fig. 8 is a similar view of a leaf with which the book may be provided, indicating lines of adhesiveapplied thereto andinterveninglines representing portions of the leaf subjected to treatment for the purpose of preventing the means for readily referring to any specific matter contained in the book. For conveniently holding the various clippings, letters, 850., there is provided the desired number of envelops B. These may be of any desired construction, and the flap b, by whichaccess is gained to the envelop, is preferably arranged at the outer edge of the book, and for holding the flap closed there may be combined with it some suitable form of holder, (designated in a general way by 0,) which may be secured to the flap by adhesive or otherwise. For the purpose of locating each particular envelop the same is provided with an appropriate reference-mark, which may be applied to a tab 2, secured to the envelop, the tabs upon the series being most advantageously disposed one below the other in such a manner that when the envelops are assembled any desired envelop may be opened out from the others in the series.
The separate memoranda or cross-index, to which reference is made in indexing and using the book, maybe divided and ruled in any desired manner to form appropriate columns headed by proper reference-subjects. Thus, for instance, there may be one column, as shown in Fig. 1 devoted to the names of the various authors of the clippings filed in the book, while other columns may be devoted to the subject treated, the page, and the envelop in which such matter is contained. These sheets for reference oriindexnnemoranda will also be preferably provided with suitable index characters, which may be marked on tabs and arranged in the series similarly to the arrange ment described with respect to characters on the tabs attached to the envelops.
Another feature embodied in the present file-book for increasing its adaptability includes that of one ormore blank leaves or pages D, to which adhesive is applied either crosswise or down thepage orin any manner for the attachment of printed or other matter, and if the adhesive is applied and allowed to dry before use I preferably treat that portion of the surface of the companion leaf with which the dried adhesive comes in contact and to which it mightotherwise stick in some manner to obviate such liability. Thus, for instance, the proper portions of the leaf may be treated with parafiin or other material to form a surface to which the adhesive will not adhere.
The present scrap-book is expansible in that it may be separated to permit the incorporation of additional leaves or envelops, and it is made in parts to facilitate access for the insertion or removal of sheets and leaves to the book. This separable construction embodies a pair of protecting cover-sections 4 4, each preferably having a flexible portion 4 at that edge which is at the back of the book. The cover-sections are connected one with the other by suitable fastening devices 5, (any appriate number,) which pass through apertures 5 in the folded-in edge 4 of the cover-sections, while the back proper of the book is formed by a flexible back portion E, adapted to embrace the rear edges of the assembled sheets and envelops and be secured in place by the fastening devices which hold the coversections to the separate sheets and envelops of the book and these lattertogether by means of the perforations 5. To form an acceptable back to the book, whatever the degree of thinness or otherwise the book may present, this flexible portion E has formed therein a number of apertures or perforations 6, which are preferably protected by eyelets. It is thus evident that upon the insertion or removal of envelops or other leaves the fastening devices may be passed through the apertures provided, and if the proper holes in the adjustable back portion are selected the back of the book will be snug and fair. There is also a further advantage incidental to the insertion of the fastening devices through the folded-in sides of the cover-sections in that when thus located the fastening devices are hidden from view when the cover-sections are closed. 7
Having described my invention, I claim 1. A separable book embodying cover-sections, one of which has its rear edge turned over and extended inward, in combination with an adjustable back portion (letachably secured to the inwardly-extending edge of said cover-section.
2. A separable book embodying cover-sections, one at least of which is provided with afiexihle portion adjacent to the back of the book and whose rear edge is bent over and extended inward, in combination with an adjustable back portion detachably secured to the inwardly-extending edge of said coversection.
3. A separable book embodying cover-sections each provided with flexible portions adjacent to the back of the book, and each coversection being turned over at its rear edge and extended inward, in combination with an adjustable back portion, and fastening devices passing through said back portion and the inwardly-extending edges of said cover-sections.
4. A file-book embodying, in combination with a series of envelops, index and other leaves, a separable covercomprising an adjustable back portion; cover-sections having flexible portions adjacent to the back of the book, whose rear edges are bent over and sive to prevent the sticking of one leaf to another; a separable cover comprising coversections provided with flexible portions having turned-in edges adjacent to the back of the book, in combination with an adjustable back portion havinga number of perforations to allow of the expansion and contraction of the book; and fastening devices passing through the turned-in edges of said flexible portions and through said back portion.
