Be it known that I, IsAAC M. WARNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Union City, in the county of Branch and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Fence-Post, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention is an improved fence-post especially adapted for use as a corner or end post; and it consists in the peculiar construction and Combination of devices hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide improved means for bracing the post and for connecting the same to a buried anchor, the said bracing means being adapted to be compactly disposed, together with the post, for storage and transportation and capable of adjustment when the post is in use to enable the latter to be maintained under all conditions of service in a vertical position.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fence-post constructed in accordance with my present improvements. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of a modied form of a fence-post embodying my improvements.
The post lis a metal tube of suitable dimensions, and its lower end is seated on and around an offset2 on the upper side of a base 3, which base is here shown asv a rectangular plate of iron or steel and of suitable dimensions. Thereby the post is detachabl y mounted on the base.
In the form of my invention shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings I employ a plurality of brace-rods 4, the upper ends of which are attached to the post at suitable points and the lower ends of which are screw-threaded, passed through openings 5 in the base-plate, at the corners thereof, and provided on their screw-threaded portions below the base-plate with adjusting-nuts 6, by means of which the brace-rods may be tightened and the post maintained under all conditions of service in a vertical position. rIhe base-plate when the post is in use rests on the ground. suitable dimensions, is buried in the ground -which are attached at their lower ends to the anchor-plate, at the corners thereof, and the upper ends of which are screw threaded, passed through openings 9 in the base-plate, which openings are preferably radially in line with the openings 5, and are provided with adjusting-nuts 10, which are disposed above and below the said base-plate and by means of which the base-plate may be adjusted with reference to the anchor-plate and the earth between the base and anchor plates compressed, as will be understood. By this construction and arrangement of devices the brace-rods which connect the post to the baseplate and the anchor-rods which connect the base-plate to the anchor are independently adjustable. Moreover, this construction enables the post to be disassembled and disposed compactly for storage and transportation. Furthermore, a post thus constructed may be made exceedingly light, enabling a great economy of material to be effected without weakening the post.
In the form of my invention shown in Fig. 3 I employ only a single brace-rod 4, the lower end of which is attached to the base-plate in the mannerhereinbefore described and the upper end of which passes through a cap 11 on the upper end of the post and is adjustably connected thereto by a nut 12. An eyebolt 13 has its shank extended transversely through the post and secured thereto by nuts 14, which bear on opposite sides of the plate. The brace-rod La passes through the eye of the bolt 13. In this form of my invention I employ also a single anchor-rod 8, which connects the anchor 7 to the base 3, the lower end of the said anchor-rod being attached to the said anchor by being passed through an opening therein, so that the head on the lower end of the said rod bears under the lower side of the anchor, and the upper end of the said anchor -rod being screw-threaded, passed through an opening 9 in the plate 3, and provided with nuts 10, which bear against the upper and lower sides of the said base-plate.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination of a buried anchor, a base-plate above the anchor, anchor-rods attached to the anchor and to the base-plate at diverging points on the latter, means to adjust the base-plate on the respective anchorrods, a post having its lower end tiltably connected to and secured against lateral movement on the base-plate at a point intermediate the anchor-rods,and brace-rods connected to and extended radially from the post and detachably and adjustably connected to the base-plate at diverging points, whereby the base-plate and post may be adjusted independently of each other, to accommodate the base-plate to the surface of the ground and preserve the perpendicular disposition of the post, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a buried anchor, a rod extending upwardly therefrom to a point above the surface, a base-plate resting on the surface and having an opening :near one side through which the upper portion of the said rod extends, the latter being screw-threaded and provided with an adjusting-nut which bears on said base-plate, a post having its lower end tiltably connected to and secured against lateral movement ou the base-plate, and a brace-rod secured to said post and detachably and adjustably secured to the baseplate at a point near the anchor-rod, Whereby the base-plate and post may be adjusted independently of each other, substantially as described.
