SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 709,345, dated September 16, 1902.

Be it known that I, HARRY S. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Westfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

. The invention relates to improvements in paper boxes.

The object of the invention is to provide a lock-corner for boxes which will be doublelocked, and hence have great strength, which may be very easily locked and will not become accidentally unlocked or broken, and which will be simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, and durable in use.

With this and other objects, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank from which my improved box can be formed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the box made up.

The numeral 1 in the drawings represents the bottom of the box, and 2 and 3 denote, respectively, the sides and ends thereof. Upon each end of the sides 2 are the flaps 4, on which are formed the looks or hooks 5, with projecting ears 6. At each end of the side pieces 2 I also form locks or tongues 7, which have ears 8, by stamping them out, as illustrated in the drawings. Upon each end of the end pieces 3 I form the flaps 9, in which I cut the slits or openings 10, which are adapted to receive the locks 7, and adjacent to each end of the sides 3 I out similar slits or openings 11, which are adapted to receive the locks 5.

In making up my box as seen in Fig. 2 the sides and ends are bent or folded up and the flaps bent inwardly. The lock 5 is then inserted in the slit 11 from the outside of the box, the projecting ear 6 of the lock springing up behind the upper end of the slit, and thus holding these-parts looked, as will be readily understood. Theloek? is now pushed inwardly and inserted in the slit 10, formed on the flap 9, and the ear 8 of the lock will spring up and engage the top end of the slit and prevent disengagement of these parts. It will be noticed that when my box is made up in this manner the locks or hooks 5 and 7 are on the inside of the box and the outer surface of the sides and ends of the box are almost smooth-that is to say, since there are no little hooks or tongues projecting outwardly to catch into foreign objects and be broken off my invention presents a box which is extremely durable and not at all liable to open accidentally or to become broken. The fact that both hooks 5 and 7 are on the side of the box is another feature in that it holds or looks the ends much more securely than would be the case if one look was on the end and the other on the side.

It is of course obvious that the covers of this box can be made in the same way, and if desired the locks 5 and 7 may be formed on the ends of the box instead of upon the sides, as illustrated, and the slits 10 and 11 are then cut in the sides.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, mode of operation, and advantages of my invention will be readily apparent, itis thought,without requiringa more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A paper box formed of a single piece of material and comprising the bottom 1 formed with the sides 2 and ends 3, flaps 4 formed upon the sides 2 with the hooks 5 having projecting ears 6, flaps 9 provided with openings 10, formed upon the ends 3, tongues 7 having ears 8 stamped from the sides 2 adjacent to the hooks 5, and openings 11 provided in the ends 3 adjacent to the openings 10, the flaps 4c upon the sides being adapted to lap the ends 3 and the hooks 5 inserted ICO 10 said hooks and tongues located upon the inside ofthe box to prevent damage incident to rough usage, substantially as set forth.
