To a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM' F. HOCH- SPEIER, a citizen ofthcUnited States, residing at `Jersey City Heights, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Vin Drafting Devices, of which the following is .describe geometrical figures of various designs, said drafting device being devised as an entertaining toy for children, as well as for use in larger sizes for Vdesigning erna; mental figures for floor-coverings, dac.; and for this purpose the invention consists of a drafting device which comprises a base-plate provided with a `center pivot, a rotary disk provided with openings of various shapes, a pointer on said rotary disk, a sheet of drafting-paper interposed between the base-plate and said disk, graduations on the base-'plate or disk along which the pointer is moved, and means for fastening the paper to the baseplate while` the geometrical tigures are drawn on the paper by the operator by means of successiveinovements ot' the disk; and the invention consists, further, of certain details of construction and combinations of parts,which will be fully described hereinafter and iinall y pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the hase-plate orblock of my improved drafting device, which base-plate may be made of wood, pasteboard, sheet metal, or othersuitable material. The base-plate A is `provided at its center with a pivot a, which is attached to the same and which serves for placing thereon a rotary disk D, which latter is provided with a center opening for receiving `the pivot-pin a, said disk being provided with a number of round, triangular, or other openings d", which are grouped around the center of the disk, so that the edges thereof serve for guiding the pencil in making the geometrical iigures, which represent various combinations formed by said openings as the disk is rotated. The rotary disk D is preferably made of sheet metal; but it can also be made of cardboard, Celluloid, or other suitable` material. 'lhe disk is provided with a pointer that is attached to the same, which pointer projects radially somewhat beyond the circumference of the disk, so as to be set along the subdivisions ot' a graduated circle a', that is marked on the base-plate A, said circle being concentric with the axis ot' the pivot-pin ot.
Interposed between the base-plate A and the rotary disk D is a sheet of paper B, which is provided with a central perforation, so as to fit over the pin a, which sheet of paper is preferablyoflarger size than the rotating disk and of smaller size than the graduated circle. This paper disk is placed on the pivotpin and held in position on the base-plate by being placed on one or more pointed pins e, which project upwardly from the base-plate and serve to hold the paper disk irmly in position` while the disk D is moved successively over the same. A large varietyof geomet- `rical figures can be drawn on the interposed disk of paper by tracing a pencil along the 85 edge of the openings d' and by moving the ro-l tary disk D step by step from one subdivision of the graduated circle ct to another. When the rotary disk D has been moved through one entire rotation, so that its index arrives at the starting-point, the geometrical iigure that is desired to be drawn on the paper disk is completed, similar to that shown in Fig. 3, which shows one geometrical design drawn by my improved device. l
My improved drafting device is intended to furnish a complete article for drawing geometrical and other figures-that is to say, it is intended to be furnished complete'with a number of paper disks-so-tliat by inserting rco a paper disk the device is ready for use. In this form the device provides a very entertaining toy for children, as it teaches a knowledge of geometrical designs while using the same.' When the paper disks are exhausted and other paper is to be used, it is necessary to cut a central opening in the paper, so as to fit over the center pin of rthe base-plate, and in this case the pencil may be passed through d2 at theend of the pointer, so as to describe a circle arou-nd the geometricaldesign made by the device, said circle enabling the user to cut the paper into disk form. Large sizes ol' the device can be made for use in making diagrams to be used in the manufact-ure of oil-cloth andother floor-coverings, Wall-papers, &c. to make the device on a larger scale, and the disk is also preferably made of celluloid or other suitable material, so as to permit the observation of the drawing ot the design.
I am aware that devices for laying out geometi-ical figures have heretofore been patented in which a plotting-disk provided with openings of different shapes are used, and therefore I do not desire to claim the saine broadly.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new andiiesire to secure by Letters Patentl. Adevice fordraftinggeometricalfigures, consisting of a base-plate provided with a center pin and pointed pins equidistantfrom said center pin, a rotary disk provided with a center opening and with openings of different sizes and shapes in the body of the disk, a pointer on said disk, and a graduated circle In this case itis preferabley `consistingoi" a base-plate provided with a projecting center pin, a plurality of pins provided' on the surface of said base-plate, a graduated circle concentric with the axis of the center pin, and a rotary disk provided vWithA a pointer at one point of its circumference and with a number of openings of different sizes and shapes, substantially as set forth.
