Beit known that I, JESSE JoHANsnN HYND- ING, a citizen ofthe UnitedStates, residing at Ferndale,in the county of Humboldt and State of California, have invented a new and useful Gate, of which the following is a specification. v
The invention relates to improvements in gates. 1
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of swinginggates and tol provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient one capable of being readily operated at a distance fromeither side ot it to enable it to be opened and closed by a person on horseback or in a Vehicle.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gate constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical `sectional View of the gearing for actuating the gate. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the same. Fig. 4isa detail View of the keeper. Fig. 5 is a detail view illustrating the manner of hinging the Fig. 6 is a detail View on the line o: of Fig. 2,il1ustrating the construction of the sector-shaped plate.

1 designates a cap designed to be fitted on the inner end bar 2 of a gate 3 and provided with a short vertical shaft L1,which may be fixed to the cap in any suitable manner and which is provided at its upper end with a pinion 5. The lower end of the bar 2 of the gate has a depending journal G, tted in a bearing-recess 7 of a bracket 8 and provided with a shank which is embedded in the lower end of the bar 2. The shank extends upward from the washer 9, and the lower end of the bar 2is supported by a band 1`O.
The pinion 5, which has bevel-teeth, may be fixed to the upper end of the shaft et in any suitable manner, and it meshes with a segment or curved series ot' teeth l2, which are formed integral with a tapering approximately scctor-shaped plate 13, provided at its lower end with an eye 14, arranged on a rounded bearing portion of a bolt 16. The bolt 16 passes through an upright or hingepost 17, upon which the bearing-bracket 3 is mounted. The rear end of the `bolt 1G is threaded, and the portion which passes l through the post is reduced to form a shoulder 1S, against which abuts a washer 19, which also tits against the post 17 to space the oscillatory sectorshaped plate 13 therefrom. The front end of the bolt is provided with an eye 20 to receive the'shaft 4, which hinges the top of the gate, and the rearlthreaded end of the bolt is engaged bya nut.v The upper portion ot the sector-shaped plate having the teeth is arranged at an inclination, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, to correspond with the bevel of the pinion, and the sector-shaped plate is provided with a central vertical extension 2l, and it has a lug or enlargement 22. The extension or arm projects vertically from the sector-shaped plate, and the lug is arranged at the back ot' the plate directly above the eye 14, and its rear face is arranged in the same vertical plane as the rear face of the extension 2l. The said extension 21 and the lower portion of the plate 13 are perforated for the reception of upper and lower bolts 23 and 24:, which secure the lower portion of` an arm 25 to the plate 13. The fastening devices preferably consist of bolts, as shown, and the upper end of the arm or bar is curved outward over the pinion and is extended upward, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The upper end of the bar or arm 25 is perforated for the reception of a bolt or rivet, which forms a pivot 26 for a latch-operating lever 27. The latch-operating lever is arranged in an upright position, and its lower end is connected by a iiexible connection 29 with a pivoted latch 30. The flexible connection4 may consist of a wire, cord, rope, cable, or the like, vand it extends downward from the latch-operating lever to a rear guide-pulley 31 and then forward or outward to a front guide-pulley 32. The guide-pulleys 31 and 32 are mounted upon the top of the` gate, and the front one is located directly above the latch 30. The latch is pivoted at its inner end, and the upper end of the latch-lever is connected with suitable iiexible connection 33, extending from opposite sides of the gate ICO and adapted to be pulled to oscillate the latchlever and the arm 25. When either of the operating-ropes is pulled, the latch-lever will be first oscillated and the arm 25 operated to release the gate, and the arm 25 will be swung toward the operator, thereby swinging the segment and opening the gate away from the operator. After passing through the gateway the other operating-rope is pulled and the gate is closed. When the gate is open, the latch engages a supplemental keeper of the ordinary construction and when closed it engages a pivoted double keeper consisting of a plate 34, mounted on a latch-post 35, and a pair of inclined blocks or pieces 36, pivoted near their upper or inner ends by bolts 37 or other suitable fastening devices and supported in an inclined position by bolts 38, having nuts forming inclined upper faces, as clearly shown in Eig. 4. When the gate closes, the latch depresses the inner end of the adjacent pivoted block or piece 36 and is prevented from swinging past the keeper by the other pivoted block or piece. The plate 34E of the keeper is provided with a central recess, and the blocks or pieces extend upward sufficiently to securely hold the gate in its closed position.
It will be seen that the gate is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, that it is easily operated, and that the operating mechanism may be readily applied to anordinary gate. It will also be seen that the gearing is arranged to support the gate, and that it cannot get out of mesh by any tendency of the gate to sag, and that it is compactly arranged above the rear end bar of the gate.
The sector-'shaped plate is provided at opposite sides of the central extension with vertical iianges 39, extending downward to the eye 14 and receiving' the rearwardly-extending lug and forming a partial socket for the lower end of the arm or bar 25.
What I claim isl. In a device of the class described, the combination with a swinginggate,and a hingepost, of a cap mounted on the gate and provided With a vertical shaft forming a pintle, a bolt secured to the hinge-post and provided adjacent to the same with a bearing portion and having an eye receiving the said shaft, a pinion mounted on the upper end of the shaft, a plate provided with an eye arranged on the bearing portion of the bolt, said plate being also provided with a curved series of teeth meshing with the said pinion, an arm extending from the plate, and a pivoted latch-operating lever mounted on the arm, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination withaswinging gate andahingepost, of a cap mounted on the gate and provided with a short vertical shaft, a bolt extending from the hinge-post and provided with a bearing portion and having an eye located beyond the bearing portion and receiving the vertical shaft, a bevel-pinion mounted on the shaft, a sector-plate provided at its lower end with an eye to receive the bearing portion of the bolt and having an extension at the top, said sector-plate being also provided with an inclined upper portion having a curved series of teeth meshing with the pinion and the lower portion of the sectorplate being provided with a rearwardly-extending lug, an arm secured to the lug and to the extension and extending forward and upward over the pinion, and a latch-lever fulcrumed on the upper end of the arm, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a hinge-post, and a gate, of a bearing-bracket supporting the bottom of the gate, a cap secured to the gate at the top thereof and having a vertical shaft, a bevelpinion secured to the upper end of the vertical shaft, a horizontal bolt mounted on the post and having an eye receiving the shaft, said bolt being also provided between the eye and the post with a bearing portion, a sectorplate provided at its lower end with an eye to receive the bearing portion of the bolt and having an inclined portion provided with teeth meshing withthe pinion, said plate being extended at the top and provided at the rear with vertical flanges and having a lug at the lower portions thereof, an arm secured to the plate and arranged between the flanges thereof, a latch mounted on the gate, a latchlever fulcrumed on the arm and connected with the latch, and flexible connections eX- tending from the latch-lever, substantially as described.
