Referring to the drawings, A designates a machine which is adapted to be used for pressing material-such as sausage, zc-and which forms no part of my invention, but I have shownrthe same in order to illustrate 4o my invention as applied thereto; but I do not desire to be limited to any form of machine, Asince my deviceis applicable to others. In the machine as illustrated the essential features. consist of la base B, having standards C arising therefrom and supporting a yoke or casting D, the base being adapted to support a receptacle E, having a suitable outlet F.
G designates a plunger adapted to move in 5o the receptacle and t the same, which plunger Fig. 8 represents aseo'-Y is vcarried by the threaded stem H, which passes through suitable collars in the yoke D, which latter is provided with a key J, which enters the slot K in the stem H, whereby the latter is prevented from turning, but can move up and down in said yoke. y
L designates a crank connected with the shaft M, which is suitably journaled in the yoke D and is provided with a gear N.
P designates a sleeve which is adapted to 6o rest upon a suitable portion of the yoke D around the stem H and has a cut-away portion in whichis adapted to fit the portion or plate Q, which is preferably curved to correspond torthe shape of the sleeve P, and on the interior face of said portion are screwthreads R, and on the exterior is situated a lug or projection S, said sleeve being provided with a gear T, which is adapted to mesh with the gear N when the parts are 7o ,in the proper position, it being noticed that the plate or portion Q is not connected with yoke A', which engages with a portion of the frame of the machine and to whichis pivoted a lever B', having anose C' thereon, said lever having an arm D' movably connected therewith and which is guided between the ways E' on the yoke A', said arm having a cut-away portion or slot F', through which is adapted to pass at the proper time a lug or projection G",which is mounted on the jaw V. A spring H' is secured to the yoke A' and bears against the jaw V, which is the movable jaw, to hold thesame in a normally closed position, The handle J is secured to the stem H for the yproper manipulation thereof.
The operation is as follows: In describing the invention I will first describe the operation of the machine as illustrated, although the same, as before mentioned, forms no part of the present invention, but illustrates one method of applying the invention. The material to be pressed is placed in the receptacle E, the plunger G being iirst raised for the proper manipulation of the crank L'. The roo plunger is caused to descend into the receptacle and press the material, this being accomplished by means of the gear N, meshing with the gear T, mounted on the sleeve P, which is caused to revolve and carry with it the plate Q, the screw-threads R of which being in engagement with the screw-threads on the stem H, the parts being in the position .seen in Fig. 4. When the plunger G has descended into the receptacle as far as it is desired and the operator wishes to return the plunger to its elevated position, the lever B' is moved so that the nose C' thereon is in the path of the revolution of the lug S, so by reversing the revolution of the crank L the parts are moved in the opposite direction from that in which they had been previously moving and the lug S engages with the shoulder C' and is held thereby, so that as the crank is turned the jaws V and U are separated, the jaw V being forced out by the plate Q, the parts assuming the position seen in Fig. 5, it being seen that the screw-threads R are thus disengaged from the threads on the stem H, which latter therefore can be quickly lifted by the operator taking hold of the handle J' and elevating the same. It will be noticed that when the lever B' is moved over it carries with it .the arm D', so that the lug G will pass through the slot F in said arm D', and that when the parts are in the position seen in Fig. 4 the jaw V is locked in position, since the lug G' bears against the arm D' and is prevented from moving over thereby until rthe lever B is moved, which carries with it the arm D' and causes the slot to be situated in the line of movement of said lug G', as above stated. After the flange and stem have been raised or adjusted to the desired position, the parts being in the position seen in Fig. 5, it will be noted that by turning the crank in order to operate the parts in the opposite direction from that indicated by the arrow in the said Fig. 5 the projection S will be removed from the shoulder C', so that the pressure thereon is relieved and likewise on the jaw V. The spring H' then acts to throw back the jaw V, and with it the plate Q, so that the screw-threads thereof engage again with the threads of the stem H'. The arm B', however, remains in the same position as is seen in Fig. 5, but by continuing the movement of the crank and the revolution of the sleeve P and plate Q in the reversed direction, as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 5, the lug S contacts with the arm B' and returns it to the position seen in Fig. 4, whereby the jaw V is locked in position, as before stated.
In Figs. 7, 8, and 9 I have shown a slightly modified or dierent construction from that already described, in which I employ a body portion J", which is suitably secured to a proper portion of the frame of the machine and which carries a spring-actuated nger or dog K', which latter is adapted to bear against the outer surface of the sleeve L', which sur.
rounds the stem M', said sleeve carrying a key N', which ts into a suitable opening in said sleeve and is held therein by means of the spring P', which can be of any desired shape, said key having the opening Q' and the extending portion R', which is adapted to move with the key N' and sleeve L' in the path of the finger K', it being seen that the key N' is provided with screw-threads on its inner face, which is adapted to engage with the threads on the stem M'. When the sleeve L is rotated in the direction indicated by the arrow, the projecting portion R' will strike the finger K' and throw it back, so that the sleeve can turn, and the stem M' will be lowered, together with the plunger on the end thereof. Vhen, however, the sleeve is rotated in the opposite direction from that indicated by the arrow, the linger L' will enter the opening Q' and force out the key N', so that the screw-threads thereon will be disengaged from the threads on the stem M' and the latter can be raised and lowered, as desired.
It will be apparent that slight changes may be made by those skilled in the art which will come within the scope of my invention, and I do not, therefore, desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a quick return for feeding devices, a threaded stem, a sleeve surrounding the same, a plate having threads on its inner face adapted to engage with and be disengaged from the threads on said stem and a collar for holding said plate in position and which is operated when said plate is disenaged from the stem and means for revolving said sleeve and plate whereby the stem can be raised and lowered.
2. In a quick return for feeding devices, a stem,a sleeve surrounding thesame,meansfor revolving said sleeve, a plate having threads on its inner face adapted to engage with the threads on said stern, a lug on said plate, and means engaging with said lug for moving said lug whereby said threads are engaged with or disengaged from said stem.
3. In a quick return for feeding devices, a threaded stem, asleeve surrounding the same, a plate having threads on its inner face adapted to engage with said stem, means for raising and lowering said stem, means for operating said plate whereby the same engages with or is disengaged from said stem, and means on said plate which is normally disengaged from said operating means, and is engaged thereby to operate said plate.
4. In a quick return for feeding devices, a stem, a sleeve surrounding the same, means for revolving said sleeve and plate, a cut-away portion in said sleeve,a plate adapted to fit said cut-away portion and having threads on its inner face,a collar adapted to normally hold said IOO IIO
stem, a sleeve having a movable threaded' portion, means for revolving said sleeve and threaded portion, pivoted jaws engaging said threaded portion whereby the same is moved from engagement with said stem.
6. In a quick return for feeding devices, a sleeve, an interiorly-threaded portion acting therewith, a gear on said sleeve, a lug on said threaded portion, spring-actuated jaws for holding said parts in normal position, a' lever adapted to engage ysaid threaded portion whereby the threads thereof are disengaged from the stem and the latter can be raised or lowered as desired.
7. In a quick return for feeding devices, a stem, a sleeve, a threaded portion movably connected therewith, jaws pivoted to each other and normally holding said sleeve and threaded portion together, a gear on said sleeve adapted to be operated to turn the latter whereby the same is raised and lowered, a lever adapted to engage with said threaded portion and cause the same to open said jaws whereby said threads on said portion are moved from engagement with the stem and the latter can be raised and lowered.

In a quick return for feeding devices, a stationary jaw, a spring-actuated jaw pivoted thereto, a lever pivoted to said stationary jaw, an arm having a slot therein connected with said lever, a lug on said movable jaw adapted to abut against said armwhen the latter is in certain positions and adapted to pass through said slot at the proper time,
a threaded stem, a sleeve surrounding said stem and having a gear thereon, and a plate having threads adapted to Vengage with the threads on said stem, said jaws holding said sleeve and plate and said lever being adapted to engage with said plate.
9. In a quick return for feeding devices, a stem, a sleeve surrounding the same,a plate having threads adapted to engage with the threads on said stem, means for revolving said sleeve and plate fory raising and lowering said stem, a lug on said plate and means engaging with said lug for moving said plate, whereby said threads are engaged with or disengaged from said stem, and means for locking said plate in either position.

In a quick return for feeding devices, a sleeve, an interiorly-threaded portion acting therewith, a gear on said sleeve, a lug on said threaded portion, means for holding said parts in normal position, and a lever adapted to engage with said threaded portion, whereby the threads thereof are disengaged from the stem and the latter can be raised or lowered as desired.

In a quickreturn for feeding devices, a stem, a sleeve, an interiorly-threaded portion acting therewith, means for revolving said sleeve and threaded portion, and means normally out of the path of the movement of said threaded portion but which is adapted to be operated to engage therewith in order to remove the threads from the threads of the stem, whereby the latter can be raised or lowered.
