BRAINERD KINGSLEY, OF SHARON, MICHIGAN.
Letters Patent No. 70,861,.date0l November 12,1867. I
IMPROVEMENT IN SHEEP-SHEARS.
the stimuli mean in in that ihtitrt 333mm an muting not at its arms.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN; at;
Be it known that I, BRAINERD KINGSLEY, of Sharon, in the some of Washtenaw, and State of Michigan, have invented an improved Apparatus for Shearing Sheep; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and letters marked thereon, making a part of this description, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective representation of my invention. v
The nature of my device consists. in the use of a substantial bar, to which are attached the lower cutters of the shears, and also to the levers which operate the same; and'also in the use of an upper plate, which, together with the lower bar, supports the'levers; and also half bands, by means of which the device is madefast to the arm by the use of straps and buckles, in order that the hand may grasp a handle or knob attached to said levers, and operate the upper'shears reciprocally against said lower cutters, and thereby sever the wool from the sheep.
The invention is designed to be used by hand, and take the place of the common shears now in use, and can be operated to a much better advantage, and perform more in a given time. And as the apparatus is very simple and readily comprehended, it is a material aid to wool-growers and others, whose business it. is to shear sheep. i
In order to give a correct understanding of my invention, I have marked corresponding parts with similar letters,'and will now give a detailed description.
A represents the lower bar, which supports the stationary post E and jointed post D, and terminates in a series of lower cutters m mm, having sharp edges, and corresponding parallel planes at their top, in order that the upper cutters or shears J J may havean even reciprocating motion. The posts E D are madeto support an upper plate, E, and semicircular bands G, the latter having slots ZZZZ, for receiving the straps which hold the device to the arm, and are made to'swing partially around, in order that they may conform to thearm, and not cramp it when in use. A lever, C, is attached to the jointed post D, and is jointed to a'lcver, B, at k, and terminates in the cutters J J, having sharp edges fitting closely against the upper sides of cutters m m m, and held in position to receive a reciprocating motion, by means of a screw, 72-. A handle, I, is rigidly attached to lever B, and used to work the shears or cutters. In the drawings, no guards below the lower cutters are shown, but may be used to prevent them from shearing too closely, or otherwise injuring the sheep. I
I use any suitable material in the manufacture of my device, and also make it of such a style or size as will be most convenient for use. The cutters, however, should be made of good steel, and fitted so as to cut nicely.
The operation is very simple, and is'as follows: 'Thelower arm should be made to rest in the half bands G, and secured by straps, or otherwise; after which the hand should grasp the handle I, and work it laterally back and forth, so as to give cutters J J a reciprocating motion for cutting the wool.
Having thus fully described my device, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The bands G G and handle I, arranged to hold and operate cutters J, substantially as set forth;
2 The combination of cutters J J and m m m, with levers B G, bar A, bands G'r,'and handle I, as set forth.
3. The plate E, bar A, posts D and E, arranged to support bands GG and lover C, substantially as described.
